1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #964 – August 28, 2013, 10:22:10 AM Travis,No, not really. I haven't been motivated anymore to work on the old girl. I take it out occasionally, but if the weather is nice I usually drive the TR7.I bought a 2011 Milan with 12,000 miles, and it has pretty much replaced the T-bird for daily driving.I am probably going to put the 'bird up for sale. It is a great car, but I still have 2 projects to complete and my garage space is limited.Maybe someone will want to take it from here and go nuts. Quote Selected
1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #965 – November 04, 2013, 03:32:29 PM Well, I just dropped my TW 170 heads off at machine shop to be verified for straightness before getting into the head swap. I just enjoy this car too much to part with it right now. I'll be fixing a small oil leak at the turbo drain and rebuilding some of the front end suspension parts while it's down. I also plan to finalize the trunk with trim panels and a modified carpet to go over the battery box. Then finish the shifter surround with version 2.0, and re-mount Megasquirt. I'm considering going to a MS 2 daughtercard to hopefully get idle a bit better. It's not terrible as it is, but sometimes will stall when it's warm going from park to reverse in a parking lot.I put a restrictor in the power steering high pressure line to reduce the flow, and it tracks more securely at highway speeds, while only adding a small amount to the idle effort. 1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #967 – November 09, 2013, 10:19:04 PM Thanks for the tip. I believe I did that to get it where it is...... but I will take another look at it. I decided to mill the o-ring out of the heads and run a standard gasket. Should end up with a 57cc chamber and 9.5:1 CR. Quote Selected

1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #969 – November 17, 2013, 07:46:21 AM Bad news from the machine shop. Some of the inner springs are broken, so I'll have be getting some new springs before I get them back. The o-ring grooves were not cut exactly square to the deck, and he ended up taking .014 from one head and .015 from the other to clean them off. Quote Selected

1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #971 – November 18, 2013, 07:31:27 AM These are the springs I've decided on getting. They should work with my retainers and locks, and be more than enough in case I want to go with more cam someday.http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-977-16/overview/We'll see about premium. :) I'm hoping to still run mid-grade for everyday driving and low boost. I can use a 2 stage boost setup to add a few pounds for when I add the good gas and/or water/alchy injection. I have the wiring in place for it and megasquirt is configured for that already.I'll run to Summit later and get all the junk need to do the swap and drop off the springs to my machinist. So far the total for parts for the head swap (not including machine shop bill) is $500.00. Plus the heads of course. Quote Selected

1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #973 – November 19, 2013, 06:09:11 AM The point is that if I can tune the car to run well on 89 octane I am not on the ragged edge to where if I get a bad load of fuel I will be pinging and knocking. This isn't a dedicated drag car that needs every HP, rather a fun and (hopefully) economical ball-busting street car.If the tune is good on 89 at 6 psi, then I can throw in a tank of premium, go on up to 15 psi and run it most likely with a safety margin at the track.I've been playing with self-tuned turbo cars for a dozen years, and I have seen how weather changes and other variables can effect the tune. Megasquirt is semi-sophisticated with how it can use IAT to help combat detonation, pull timing as boost occurs, etc....... but it isn't perfect. I like to have a fair amount of 'headroom' in the tune. More fueling is NOT the answer in itself, either. Going richer than 11.5:1 is just robbing power to no benefit. I still won't be happy until I get the mileage over 20 either. I am planning a gear change soon. The 3.73 is way too much for economy, and the car will be faster in a 1/4 with less. I'm watching CL for a used axle to rebuild. Quote Selected
