Looking great! Are you going to keep the Snowflakes?

Thanks!

Right now I'm thinking the 'flakes will be my 'winter wheels'.

I'll be looking to get some staggered 8-9" chrome or some black with polished lip 17's next spring.

I was thinking black with a polished lip but haven't found any I like. Have you found a pair that caught your eye yet?

Made a little moving picture showing the carpc working on 12V.

http://s272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/flylear45/Thunderbird%20videos/?action=view¤t=carpcvideo.mp4

Now that it's bench tested I can start to install it.

The monitor, PC and a 5V power supply all start up when the ignition is turned on, UNLESS I override it with a switch on the dash. Kind of a master switch.

When the master is turned off or the ignition is switched off, it waits for 30 seconds then powers off the PC and goes to deep standby. If the battery voltage then drops below 11V it goes hardoff.

The power supply also has a time delay for bringing on the audio amp. It all seems to work fine at this point.

I picked up a Sony 600w 4 channel amp and a pair of 4 way 6 1/2" door speakers yesterday and modded the switch panel for 2 extra switches in place of the antenna and premium switches.

Spent a LOT of time repairing the drivers door panel. I drilled out all the rivets and re-did them using washers for reinforcement. I also had to make a couple of brackets to replace broken ones at the front of the armrest.

The end results were worth the effort, though.

I put in a pair of Sony 4-way speakers in the doors for sound. For now I'll hook up the factory rears and these. Eventually I'd like to get a sub to replace the rears.

I just spent the morning sorting through all my boxes and consolidating. I have gone from 20 boxes down to 7.

Now it's time to get the dash put back together and get the rear wiring done for the amp and PC supply and grounds.  While I'm at it I want to put the headlights and foglights on a relay. Now is also the time to get the remote door lock unit in.

Gotta run to radio Shack for a microphone extension cord for the Andrea mic., then mount that, the GPS antenna, and the LAN antenna.

I also need to find a spot to mount the HD radio so it doesn't get interference. I expect that will go behind the dash where the old radio was. This is just a box, there isn't a head unit to deal with.

Very nice door panels.  I'm jealous of how nice they are and turned out.  It sounds like you made them durable for the long haul too.  It will be nice to check off the doors as complete!

Good luck on the wiring!  It sounds like you still have a lot of that to do.  If you have any issues, call Vinnie - he loves that sort of thing.

LOL  I'm not a music nut by any means. The TR7 doesn't even have a radio or speakers yet. I want this one to sound 1/2 decent, though.

BTW, my son blew out the Daytona speakers the first week he had it. I'm not po'ed though. I figure 23 year old speakers were pretty close to death anyway. His car has to wait until my car is on the road.

Thanks, they look better than I ever had hoped! They have been wrapped up in bags ever since I got this car, and I never even looked at them until I pulled them out to install.

Changing out the rivets that hold on the attachments made a HUGE difference in how solid the armrest feels. The front attachments I fixed with strips of 18g metal that I riveted through the armrest. The rivets are in very inconspicuous places, and should last.

Poor Vinnie. If I was closer I'd be over giving him a hand. I need to have my hands on wiring stuff. I need to have test gear in hand to check things while I think. I'm not a good internet troubleshooter I'm afraid.

I spent an hour tracing and fixing an issue with the passenger door switch. I wish I'd done it before I installed the dash! Once that was sorted out I started to scratch my head over the speaker wiring. To shorten the story, it turns out that the PO must have swapped body harnesses at some point. I removed an amp from the rear seat area, but the front speaker wire harness wasn't back there!

The fix was to run new wires up to the dash and splice in to the radio connecter. Not a big deal, but I spent an hour looking for wiring that wasn't there!

I got the OD cancel switch and light wired in and ran the wires for the switch panel and connected the Gentex mirror wires. Back on it today.

Wiring done for HD radio, USB hub, GPS, LAN, monitor, and PC master switch. I popped out the third brake light to run the cables for GPS and LAN antennas. Otherwise, the cabling from the Megasquirt, Bauman, monitor, hub, and HD radio all come up the sides.

With luck and a full day of working on it tomorrow, I may get the install done on the PC stuff and get the dash together.

OH! I found a sweet little program called joystick2mouse 3.0. I am thinking I may dissect a USB controller and mount some buttons and a POV joystick in the console next to the seat controls. Then I could put a cup holder in the ashtray area.

Got all the wiring done on the Directed remote for trunk lock, horn and doors. I'm putting a valet button in it with a flashing LED, too.

Works like it should so far.

Built a nice little quick disconnect harness for the PC. I'll just have to undo 2 connecters and unplug all the peripherals and it can be removed for repair. I like it!

I'm down to mounting the PC master relay and trunk fuse panel, mounting the amp and PC cases, and connecting up the stuff. I also have been working on bundling and tying off all the wires and cables to keep them neat and out of the way. There's still a fair amount of that to do, but not until the finished install is tested. I don't want to put all the interior in and find out that I have issues.

Would have done more but I had to do a repair job on the Chevy gas filler neck and played a little golf since the weather was so nice. Spent all of today in an International Procedures refresher class. Mostly just trying to stay awake, LOL.

I have the day off  tomorrow and the weather isn't gonna be golf friendly, so I can get some work done!

I'd like some pictures and specs on your pc setup. I was dead set on doing it a couple years ago. Now with my android phone, there is almost no point.

One thing I was dead set on was mounting a keyboard to the steering wheel. I even bought a laptop style keyboard with touchpad intigrated in it. I was going to just mount it over the bottom 3/4 of the wheel, leaving enough room to grip all around.

What's the thing to use for a monitor now? The liliputs still, or did the usb only take over?

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Really good point about the new Android / Ipad / Iphone devices.  You could just install a mount for a 10" tablet and have something you could take with you as well as use in the car if all you want is an entertainment solution.

My 'needs' list is still too long to be served by an android device, so the PC solution appears to be my best choice.

Specs at present:
Atom based desktop with a M2-ATX 12V power supply
500 GB 3 1/2" HDD  (to be replaced with a SSD in the future)
Display is a 7" Mini-touch touchscreen from MO-Co-SO
Directed HD radio ported in with Mitch's Devices cable
Andrea Superberam USB microphone above sunvisor
GPS receiver on package shelf
WI-FI antenna on package shelf
Bluetooth receiver
Powered 4 port USB hub in console (powered from 12v-5v DC-DC converter to reduce load on PC 5V rail)

Software loaded so far is Windows 7, Riderunner FE, (undecided on the actual skin, but playing with DFX and 2 others), Winamp, Joystick2mouse 3.0, Megatune and Tunerstudio for the Megasquirt, Baumann transmission tuning software, Innovate wideband software.

I was going to use a touchpad on the center console, but I'm now thinking I'll be dismantling a USB gamepad and mounting one of the joysticks, the D pad and 5 of the buttons from it instead. That'll put all the controls I should need under my right hand.  The touchpad is nice, but it's a bit large to fit anywhere very neatly.

I'll be posting pictures here soon. I intend to detail the console mods here, too.

EDIT: I forgot to respond earlier, but you still see both kinds of monitor. The resolution is better on the HDMI I guess. It depends on screen size, too.

Taking a break from wires and working on other stuff.

The foam seals on the dash vents were all gone, and the dash panel was filthy anyway, so I took it all apart and made up some seals.

I used headliner material and it worked really well.
