my 09 autoX thread

finally got out to my first event today. felt like it had been forever, but i only skipped two events at the beginning of the season(first was still snowing, second was 38deg and raining).
this was a driving school. less of a competition event, and more of a chance to get extra seat time and personal instruction. as it goes, im not sure they are gonna let me back into the school events anymore ;)

the new tires are great, and the car ran flawlessly all day. i am very happy with the car. some more practice, and i might actually be competitive in my region.
there was a pair of audi S4's and a bmw M3 who were runnin slightly better times than me, and maybe a couple others i dont remember. ill post the final results as soon as they hit the website.

at the drivers debriefing there were a couple guys in STi's complaining that the exits of the garages were too narrow. these guys were part of a group that ran 39 combined runs and only managed ONE clean run the whole afternoon. our assistant RE chose the use my runs as an example. my "big ass tbird ran faster than them, and only picked up 2 cones all day."
i tried to explain it is only 105" wheelbase :shakeass:

Okay, a "garage" is a pair of cones and you're supposed to drive between them?

Those 4wd guys think the car should be sideways all the time.  When talking about the wheelbase, don't forget to remind them that big ol' car has just a tiny 4 banger.

So what do you think you can do to run better times????  Or what could be better????? Just some food for thought.....

we have different types of garages. basically just boxes, with differing entrance and exit locations depending where in the layout they are used.
these garages were a box open on one end(entrance) and exiting from a side.

Great job, no doubt quite a rush and fun to "show up" some of the expensive iron...

I tried my hand at auto Xing some years ago in the '86 5.0 Stang... Unfortunately it had rock hard tires and on most runs, I knocked down more cones than I left standing... LOL

Thanks for the vocab exercise.  I don't think we have a specific name for that down here, but if so, it would probably be "drunk's garage".

How is your car classed, considering all the changes?  Are you using Solo rules, points, or ...?

ok, results are up...

http://home.comcast.net/~vbrunamonti/cscc/Results%204-25-2009%20Drivers%20School.pdf
looks like i was second quick in the school w/a 60.095. i talked with the guy faster than me, and he doesnt know where his 58.8 run came from either :flip:, but he did have another 59.4 run as well.
there is one 59sec run listed for a green mini, but i know that was an instructor run, and i know which instructor it was too(he also drives a green mini, more on that in a moment).

the school is run on saturday. on school weekends, the sunday event is run w/the same course layout as the school. that is nice in a couple ways; those who attend the school have a good chance at finishing the event well since they get extra runs, and those like me who skip the event get to compare the school times to the actual event times.
http://home.comcast.net/~vbrunamonti/cscc/2009_Apr_Overall.pdf
FTD was 53.148
third quick was the instructor with the green mini @  53.414
if i add my tire handicap, and put myself in the event results, my best run would be a 59.095. that would put me 19th of 43 overall and 6th of 9 in SM.

not horrible for only my 4th autoX ever. :burnout:

Ya need to come to toledo some time, lol.  I missed my first event this year due to blown head gasket, but ran my truck again, rofl.  But I got second in sm out of 4 due to my not being able to drop 2.5 seconds to catch the lexus IS300.  They also split the sm in nworscca to give the fwds their own class - smf

not much to report here. spent another sunday mid-pack-ish overall and in the bottom half of my class.

probly would have ended the day a bit better, but couldnt get my head in the game at the end. spun out during my fourth run, and the BOV stuck open near the end of my 5th run. normally my first run is pretty rough and i progress upward from there, but the hiccups really threw off my concentration.

last event of the year, decided to take my truck out for an autoX since the tbird is down for repairs and the weather was beautiful today.....couldnt resist

expecting to be the only truck i was mildy surpised to have a lil competition from a pair of dakota R/T's(FSP) as well as a caprice wagon classed in SM like myself.
i handled the wagon pretty well; covered his times by nearly a full second. the R/T's put up a good fight though. both R/T's had 6spd swaps, plus lowered, upgraded sway bars, and wider tires.
my truck is a 93 ranger, lowered w/DJM beams and splash coils, B2 sway bars, 12" front discs/SN95 rears, and a 2.3T pushin 10psi.
raw time to raw time, one of them got me by about .5 sec....but they hit ALOT of cones where i only hit one all day, so official times i might have beat them....
considering this was my first time in the truck and only running a 225 tire vs. their 275's i felt pretty good overall.

ill post links to the final results as soon as they are posted.

after actually running the truck hard, i have added a few parts to my future mods "short" list:
  • L/S rebuild. two places in this layout probly cost me .5sec total on each run due to my worn out L/S slipping more than limiting...
  • CVPI steering box. stock ratio box is way too slow for autoX
  • dead pedal. floppin around the cab w/no place to put my left foot for support FTL!!

Thats awesome!  Too bad you couldn't run the car but your truck sounds pretty cool as well.  Any pics of the truck?
