Don't mount lers too close to the floorpan

I just popped the rear seat bottom out of an 87/88 TC and this is what I found. The hole in the bottom of the rear seat is about six inches deep. That HAD to smell. Unbelievable.

It's got stock looking exhaust on it now that looks okay, but who knows what was on it before. Both sides were like that, but the pass side was worse. It looks like they were only miles away from possibly burning up the entire car. I've pulled a lot of rear seats out of TCs and I have never seen anything even close to that before. Scary stuff.

Scary indeed I wouldn't have expected that in a million years. Close? I'd even guess touching or firmly planted against the floor like the whole surface area of the  haha. I mean the pictures say it all that's some home-cooked backseat right there. :hick:

I think most internal parts are flame retardant material.

I don't see how it got that hot.  Must have been a  that was leaking.  Maybe it was running pig rich.

I had a 40 series Flo Master on my 86', in the stock location and it did the same thing but alot worse. I had a hole thru the top of the seat that I could put my hand thru.
I had started the car cause it was cold outside and I had my 2 dogs in it. I came out like 15 minutes later to leave my friends, the whole car was filed with smoke and the dogs were huddled in the front floor board.
They were ok, but the car smelled really bad. And yes, the car ran extremely rich. At times it looked like a diesel p/u. I took care of that problem.

That is exactly why I have some header wrap and some decent anti-heat reflective panels above the lers and on the pipes.  Cheap insurance in my opinion.
