Making an Explorer GT40 upper work with SD January 02, 2008, 11:49:52 PM So I thought I'd post this up for you SD guys:D . If you want (or NEED to in my case) to use the Explorer GT40 intake on your 5.0 but you have SD it can be done. The first thing you'll notice about it is that the vac fittings are different from the stock intake. If you have MA you have enough fittings and the one on the lower front that faces forward can be capped off. Now if you have SD that lower fitting is ideal for a vac source for the MAP sensor as it needs its own fitting for proper vac signal (ie you can't run something else off it or the MAP gets a "dirty" signal and the car idles funny). Now the problem with that is you need to run vac hose under your upper and it looks a bit "untidy". Since my car is basically a show car I like to keep everything neat but I still need that extra vac source. Here's what I did. First I removed and plugged that forward facing vac fitting. It cleans up the intake and makes it look "stock". Next I got the vac fitting from the rear of a stock HO upper. I then removed the bent rear fitting from the rear of the Explorer GT40 and drilled and tapped the intake to accept the stock HO fitting. The vac connectors stick out too far and you'll need to cut about 1&3/4" off of the fitting to make it work. Now you have a GT40 Explorer upper that has its vac fittings in the stock HO location so you don't have to re-route your vac lines:D Quote Selected

Plus it wouldn't match the block and heads. The dirt is a non issue as I clean the engine and bay at least once a week :D Quote Selected
Making an Explorer GT40 upper work with SD Reply #5 – January 03, 2008, 12:54:37 AM I actually love that light blue a lot. :flip: Jeez thunderjet you and your eat-off-it engine bay!!! Grrr so jealous...actually to be honest mine would look a whole lot better with a can of degreaser and a hose. Maybe I'll get around to it. :hick:. That and a new radiator, for some reason all the fins on mine are either brown-red or green from corrosion and literally crumbling apart and getting blown all over everything like the accesory brackets, like confetti....but bad. :hick: Quote Selected

I don't think the engine flows enough air to warrent a ported GT40 Quote from: 32VFoxBird;195656in half the time it would have taken me to do all that, i could have rerouted my vacuum lines.I know I could have taken the easy way out but I'm trying to make it look stockish and less messy;) Quote Selected

Oh yeah, You need that converter I've been trying to sell too!The heads flow 200cfm so I don't know how much increased airflow would help when the unported Explorer GT40 flows enough to support the heads. I wonder how much power the stock HO intake I used last summer was keeping the engine from making............. I decided to wait till the car comes out in the spring to install the GT40 because I want to drive it hard back to back with the stock HO and then GT40 intake to see how much of a difference the intake swap makes. I know I need a converter but I'm trying to finish the intake and exhaust first;) Quote Selected
