Update on the Thunderbird

Starting last week.

Well, Friday I went and cleaned up the shop. Saturday at about noon Me and my friend started to take the engine out. My uncle supervised. We got the hood off and then labeled everything as we took it off. We didn't think we would get it out since we couldn't break anything. By about 10 that night we had the engine out with the tranny and them seperated. 10 hours of strait work yee haw. Then sunday we started taking the engine apart. We got down to the crank up to heads. Then monday I finished up by myself and found a spun bearing. and a few of them were wore down. I will try to get a picture in a day here. Tuesday we took the block, heads and crank up to the machine shop. the block will have to be bored 30 over and the heads will be shaved. But we found out the crank can't be ground down. So friday I get off of school so I get to start tearing apart the old 1990 Coguar engine to see if that crank is the same. Then we will take it to the machine shop by afternoon and see what it needs to be. Then we will order a complete rebuild kit from norther auto parts. When we took off the exhaust we broke the bolts so we came up with the idea of taking the cutting torch and just putting new holes in. now we think we are just going to go buy exhuast pipe and bend it ourselfs, true duel with thunderbolt glasspacks. why? cause it's cheap. about 40 bucks, thats why. Thats about how far we are now. so yeah, i can't wait till its done.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

I got the crank out of the cougar last night. I got a few pictures of the blown head gasket, and a pic of some friends that were taking a home up by the intake manifold, I have many more, I will try to remember to take pics when we put it all together.

Yep, it blowed up real good!!!

And if that yellow stuff is what I think it is, you're now missing one of the insulation "blankets" from between a fender and its liner. They come wrapped in garbage-bag-like plastic and are inserted in various areas to le road and engine noise. I noticed a bunch of fluff under my air intake grilles, just ahead of the windshield, along with little bits of chewed-up plastic. I wondered what all that flappity-flappity stuff was getting sucked through the heater fan.
