if it's 2wd, it's quite possible to break a 9" axle.  They are mostly 28 splines.  It's the 4x4's that got 31's.  But still, it take quite a bit to break one.  Sometimes asphalt isn't forgiving, lol.

I should also mention some F100's in the 70's had dana 44's in the rear.

Exactly, it must be a 2wd with 28 splines. I've had a 9" Detroit Locker in my 1969 Torino 428CJ since I bought it in 1978 and it has been perfect. It's a 4.11 and has seen a bazillion trouble free launches in the last 30 years. It's a 31 spline though.

Heck I'd go 35 splines and a detroit locker, or equivalent.  Then really smoke'em!!

Honestly, though, another 4x4 complete axle might be the way to go...typically they cost $100 used.  IIRC, you'll need the wider U-bolt plate to line up with the 4x4 axle pad.  4x4's had 3" wide springs and the 2wd's had 2.5" springs.

You'll end up with a 3.55 gear, too....possibly w/traclock

hell my 9 inch is out of a station wagon, joys of it 3 inch wide rear drums, drags the assend of the stang to a stop MUCH faster then stock, my dad had it shortened and custom cut axles put in, with a traclock, and 4.11's. When I drive the car I'm not easy on it, and my dad pushes it, and we cant seem to hurt anything but the t-5! That rear takes everything and anything!

It's amazing what you find under the paint, isn't it?
Are you butt welding or lap welding? It was tough to tell in the pics.
It doesn't look like you need a whole lot to fix her up.
