Invisible Speedo!

Before I start taking the dash apart and order a new speedo I figured I would see if anyone else has dealt with anything like this.

Last wednesday I got into my car after work. While turning the key and looking down but not specifically at the speedometer (base digital) I did notice that the display came on with its startup sequence showing 188 and all that. I did a 3pt turn to turn myself around and started on my way. I looked down to check my speed and saw nothing. There was no speed, odometer, or trip odometer in the display but the backlights were on as they were supposed to be.
When I hit the highway  I tried to set the cruise to the speed of traffic but that wasnt working either. I figured  a fuse had blown so I checked my book and #17 seemed a likely culprit. unfortunatly the fuse was fine and thus starts the chase.
The only other ideas I can come up with are an additional inline fuse behind the dash is bad or perhaps the vehicle speed sensor has gone bad.
So heres where I say any and all suggestions appreciated!

When I had a digital speedo,my bulb went out in it and all of the display was gone.Did you check the bulb for the speedo?Easy to swap out.10 minutes maybe.Bulbs going bad in those are commonplace.

no didnt check that. but ill head out now. I figured that it was like a calculator display where only the backlight has a bulb. thanks vin!

funny eric!. I know NEW ones dont exist but there are usually a couple used ones kicking around in the 4sale section. maybe this is just an opportunity to get a 199mph modded speedo!

I agree on changing the bulbs...but in case that doesn't work, there are some troubleshooting procedures that can be done with that speedo. They are lengthy and convoluted, but they do exist...so we could offer that to you. Just let us know your progress.

I had a problem with my digital Speedo, you couldn't see how fast you were going but cruise control still worked :S...  Then when I took out the speedo the connecter for the blub on the cluster was shot so I took it out from the lamp out and wiper fluid low and switched them.  Since those two our bigger then the the normal light ones they worked...  Where I'm getting at is it can't be a blub problem if your cruise control worked before but doesn't now..

Heres my questions for you to aim at the problem.

1. Do you see the green area lit up where it should show the speed?
2. Do you still see the regular start up screen which it produces when you turn the key?
3. Did your crusie control work before this problem?  * Just double checking *
4. Does everything esle work on the dash besides the digital speedo?
5. Did you hit any sudden hard bumps before the problem started?  * Reason I ask this is our digital standard clusters have 2 connecters unlike the buttstuffog.  One cable will light it up but the other will show the speed and so on, working the computer then the bulbs.  So it could be possible because I had this problem from me tho that 1 of the cables is out or a wire is broken. Just thinking of what the problem could be. *

I strongly disagree that its the bulbs tho, I'm sorry but Cruise control wouldn't stop... and if you shine a flashlight at the screen like I used to you would see the numbers.  Also the screen wouldn't be green at all and be black ...

in my DIY link above my sig, there is a step by step process to remove/replace the cluster.

when you get to the speedo, check the sockets and make sure the metal tabs are bent out enough to make contact now and the future.  The tabs are easy to bend and over time, they just need tweeked a little.

the two bulbs on the top of the speedo unit are likely the problem as you have no numbers but the illumination is there.  Go ahead and check all your bulbs while your at it.

good luck.

If you want to mod your own speedo,, just open it up and run a jumper wire across the circuit card with the area called "W2"

button it all up and your done.

btw,, speeo mod is also in my diy link.

I wuold suggest you check the two large connectors on the rear of the cluster for a intermittant connection prior to pulling things completely out.  You can finagle the cluster out far enough to reach back there and check.

having the cruise go out is odd,, check for intermittant connections first though and the cruise might come back.  I can post diagrams of the cluster and double check the funtionality of cruise as it relates to connector A and B if you like.

1. Do you see the green area lit up where it should show the speed?
Yes the backlighting works fine
2. Do you still see the regular start up screen which it produces when you turn the key?
No. After starting it that one last time when this happened it shows nothing
3. Did your crusie control work before this problem?  * Just double checking *
Yes CC worked and I used it regularly. It is he symptom that made me think a common fuse somewhere blew
4. Does everything esle work on the dash besides the digital speedo?
In regards to temp, oil, gas, alt light, yes they all work
5. Did you hit any sudden hard bumps before the problem started?
Sorry no bumps, no parked cars, just no trauma. It was there, I did a 3pt turn and it was gone

Sorry since I went out and started tearing into it I hadnt seen this tilll I came back to report. But now for the update. I took it apart and the  bulbs were fine. Dissconected it to check for corosion but it was clean. And most imporyantly  reassemblly did not fix the problem. Any new ideas?

Then it has to be the Computer on the digital Speedo itself, it much of fried.  So my advise to you would be to get another cluster from the market of the forums, because they are cheap can get them from 10 - 35 dollars Including shipping if your in US.  Or try to just get the computer part of the digital speedo, but either way change it.  Then see if the screen comes up again, to my knowledge that should fix it.

P.S. the screen doesn't show miles or trip at all correct?

Because if its just the Speed then I would state its the speed senser...  But if nothing like miles and that are showing up then its the Computer in the digital speedo...

Also if u get a new cluster, put your old blubs in because the new cluster blubs might not work and you know your current cluster blubs work....
