Door locks

snipp'd from feedback forum...

Chuck and Eric, thank you for pointin out the lock differences, i didnt know FORD changed systems, or that the keys operate differently from the early cars. would have been a highly disappointing discovery to make on my own.
Eric you mentioned interchagability between round and rectangle door cylinders. will they interchange from similar year cars(mine is an 87, so ill use it for example)? if the round and rectangle do not interchange, i will hafta keep that in mind as i search for another set.

On mine the difference was in how they attached to the linkage in the doors, unless I'm just completely unaware that the lock cylinders will come out of those housings.  My doors are an '84 and an '85 and I want to think the door cylinders I got were from an '86. I wound up just reusing the '83 "illuminated" door locks.

Can you be a little more specific Eric?

AFIK all double sided key door locks interchange back into the '60s(includes lighted and theft system types)... The linkage arm on the assembly is held with a "C" clip... Remove clip and lever flips over for right or left side operation...

BTW...

Eric the pre '86 types have FIVE pins not eight... I've re-pinned locks to fit a good set of keys more than once(on the five pinners)...

And going further there are five different size pins in those...  I used to have a supply of pins in numbered bins pulled from passenger door locks(those usually weren't worn badly).... Also had a "V" shaped key reader that would give size pin to use...

Therein lies my confusion..there was no way the lever arm on the original lock was going to fit the ones I got.

I need to try and find them and snap a pic.

Well quite possibly there are some I haven't seen, really haven't messed much with locks recently(like in 20 years)... I do have a lighted set from a '88 TC, I'll take a look see(if I can find them)... Hey that rhymes... :hick:

Back in awhile...

Yeah, it's 5-pin for pre-'85, and 8-pin for '85-88. I was going off memory...checked my notes and what do you know, Tom hits another home run. :)

A square illuminated lock will fit in a regular lock hole, IIRC. But I think it has a different length rod that attaches to the latch mechanism. Generally that stuff can't interchange. I've got a whole bag full of door lock stuff that I'll try to remember to dig up when I get home.

I do recall messing with the latch quite a bit in my old '88 Sport, which had illuminated key locks and keyless entry. I believe the whole latch mechanism is different for those cars. There is a unique wiring harness that snakes over to all that stuff, and part of it attaches to the latch (ground for the illuminated entry light). For some reason that car kept killing power door lock solenoids about every six months, so I was always in that area of the door. Never did find out what the cause was...sold the car, problem solved. ;)

Chuck... Thought I was goin' crazy... Was defiantly a scary Senior Moment...

Well Eric, you're going to have to take it from here, I don't see the set of '88 locks I thought I had... A buddy was going to get them, but I thought he'd changed his mind... Anyway they ain't here...

ok, time for some history, and the reason this all came about...

when i purchased my car from the hillbillies i was given one aftermarket ignition key, half cut. no trunk key, therefore no glove box, and the ignition key wasnt cut for doors, so ovbiously not helpful there.
it looks like the car had been stolen/repo'd at some point as the column is busted slightly around the ignition cylinder.

so i am in need of a complete lock set, though not desperate as i do have a workin ignition key.
my door locks are rectangle and illuminated FWIW. i am deletin all the fancy schmancy functions on this car, and if regular round locks would work, id use them, but it sounds like they wont. thanks for that heads up!

this wasnt intended as a wanted add, but i appreciate the offers for help puttin together a workin lock set, lemme know what you got ;)

Pics...you can see that the square ones are designed to use the same hole, but the backs are definitely different (although I might be missing a piece back there LOL):

Those are TOTALLY different from the earlier ones like on my doors.  Those are like what was sent to me.

Perhaps if that arm was attached they would have worked, but lacking those, there is no way the early arm/c-clip will fit those.
