yeh the vas trick can get messy but you dont have to go overboard with it.  i occassionally have to repaint my black sport grill (i just put one coat over the chrome finish, paint chips get bad but a quick respray = fixed) and i've always used it on the bird emblem.  the trick is not to glob it on, but just a thin layer.  thinner the better if its a huge glob it can ruin what you painted or actually peel the paint when you whipe the paint and vas off.

but its still up to what you feel like doin.  you could try it out or mess around with the trick while building a model or something?

Awsome Vinnie. A new question though on this color of my car. It's kinda a flat white, and the code in the door is like cooligan.... it's not bluish. How do I match the paint to re-do the grill. Just guess?

i wouldnt worry about it until you paint the whole car. take the gas cap lid off, and take it to an auto paint supplier. they'll be able to match it.

guys, here's a little tip that i've always used.  you see yes you can take the time to mask your project up correctly, buy you'll sometimes end up having to redo it, it happens.  vasoline though, you take a cuetip and spread the vasoline on anything you dont want paint to stick to.  then with a rag or medical gauze wipe away and clean whats to be painted.  its usually faster than masking but that could be debatable.

used vasaline to do the trim around my radio. an i just came in from painting the other dash trim an used it again. think i saw it in one of BlackJacks post. works great

cool, i guessed it was an old trick b/c when my dad was a kid all the way up till i think he was 25 he would build model cars, destroy them, and buy a new one.. always came up with a crazy way to do it, but thats where i got the idea, he said he'd use it to do custom paint jobs or touch ups on already painted stuff.  he's got a couple models of nascar cars that are still on shelves but thorugh the moves and me bein a lil kid playing with them (late 80's) they're trashish.  at least he's good for something LOL.
