I know my 85 XR7 has the smooth pad with the latch button on top. I guess maybe the XR7's got them.

My 86' didn't have a full length console. It ended at the back of the front seats. It appeared to be original, but then my car had been modified anyway when I bought it.

I have to correct myself. I just went out and up into my storage above the garage, my console did go back to the rear seat. It has a little ashtry and the switch for the rear lights. OOOOPPPPPSSSS, my bad  :punchballs:

I dont know who asked this question to the seller but this confirms it.

It WAS NOT dealer installed.

Q:     Who performed the conversion?    Jun-12-07
A:     I did the entire project myself over a two year period. When I conceived the idea in 1990 I would have paid handsomely for all the information I needed, but was unable to find through any sources I knew of. I learned that both the Thunderbird and the Mustang shared the Fox platform and I felt hopefulIy confident that the engine would fit. So I wrote to Ford and was able to aquire the electrical schematics for both cars. With these in hand I started disassembling the car and embarked into the unknown. That is why I kept such detailed documentation of the conversion, because at the time I felt like I was entering the unknown. Nowadays as you know, there are a couple of companies that specialize in this sort of project, but it wasn't that way when I started out!

Wow that's interesting.  The guy was definitely ahead of his time.  He did a wonderful job on it.  Anyone know where he got that sticker saying "Ford Authorized Modification" though?

If you have the light switch and ashtray then it didn't go all the way back to the seat. Otherwise there wouldn't be much point in the ashtray or button. ;)

I am pretty sure you can go to any dealership and get a sticker printed like that. Basically it is like a retrofit sticker for A/C. The dealership has stickers that say authorized modifications for anytime they reflash the ECU. All that sticker is an empty sticker that was printed with whatever the guy wanted it to say. The major difference is most of the stickers i have seen are just handwritten.

My 87 had the think lid with the groove down the middle.  Though I'm thinking that car had a bunch of stuff it shouldn have had.

More on the LID issue:

John's 90K mile 84 TC has the FLAT lid.

My 87 parts car (sideswiped by 18-wheeler) has the tall lid with the split

Both of our 88 TC's have the flat lid

My 87 Sport has the flat lid

The only 1983-86 cars I've ever seen with flat lids are in XR7's/TC's. But I have a full 1984 XR7 console, Charcoal with the Oxford Grey lid, and it's a tall lid. Which, amazingly, is exactly how the 1984 Cougar brochure depicts it (and even through 1986 XR7's).

Now I have found 1987-88 junkyard cars with tall lids (either charcoal or color-keyed), but most of them have been the flat, charcoal-colored ones.

So is there any rhyme or reason to the lids?
I'm thinking not. :)

Technically, almost anything can be "correct" when it comes to console lids. Say I have a 1986, Canyon Red interior, Canyon Red console. What's the correct lid?

a) Flat, charcoal grey
b) Tall, Canyon Red
c) Tall, Charcoal Grey

The answer is...pick one, it's probably right. ;)

I haven't found anything definitive in my dealer order books because the console, as stated before, is part of the seating option, and therefore isn't a standalone entry in the options list. Later books do give some other interior color options (like the color on the top of the dashboard) but I don't recall seeing specific info for console lid colors/styles. Unless Brent has that info somewhere.
