Water temp?

1st off this isn't for my car. This is for a guy  I work with. He has a 93 stang LX 5.0 It a nice car but lately his temp gauge is acting up. Everytime he turns on his headlights his temp gauge goes up about 1/8"-1/4". He has changed the sender, but it is still happening. So does anyone have any Ideas what might be the problem.
Thanks

Sounds to me like one of two things.  A.  A bad ground in the cluster.  B.  A bad IVR (Instrument Voltage Regulator).  Try this to verify the ground.  Have him turn the dash lights down as low as they go, then back up, and watch the gauge.  If it moves when he moves the , chances are it's a bad ground connection.  Is it a northern car from the land of rust?  Chances are there's some rust forming on a screw through the sheet metal that was used for a ground, with the threads of the screw exposed to the elements.  Find a place to re-attach the ground inside the car where it will stay dry, and make sure to burnish the paint under the lug to assure a good ground.  Check the connectors on the back of the cluster real good for corrosion too.  If it's the IVR, I've seen a unique fix or two in here.  Do a search for IVR, and see what you find.
