T-Shifter wonders

ok well a pretty long time ago i had parked my car, came back to it and when i went to take it from park into gear it wouldnt budge, the  button popped out on me.  so i was sittin there sayin to myself WTF?!  i called a friend and he gave me a ride home.  it sat for 2 days till my dad had the time to get to it and fix it.  being that the button was broken it wouldnt disengage.  so my dad (i dont remember if it was under the car or in the car) put a ziptie on the button where it WASNT broken.  so i can go from p to 1, 1-d-od-n-r-p without the button.  i never considered this till i saw the rinky  shiznit they sell at the local parts store for shifter s.  i was wondering if i could remove the stock T handle (the bare plastic, the leather was the first thing to fall off/apart in my int) i dunno what i'd replace it with, but i was wondering if it was as easy as rotating it off like its screwed on.  i havnt atempted to do so just incase i break something.  but has anyone ever heard of someone replacing the handle on the auto t handle shifter?

The stock floor shift handle pops onto the metal shaft; they do not screw on. To remove it, push in the button (no problem for you, eh!), grip the handle, and pull up like crazy. A slight rocking motion sometimes helps too. Try not to smack yourself in the cheek, too. That's pretty embarassing.

Now, once you get that removed you'll notice a few things. For one, there is a spring inside the handle. If that broke, that's the reason why you're having problems and need a zip tie. Also, in the shifter shaft there is a white plastic bump rod. If that breaks, again, you won't be able to shift correctly.

So there you go...everything you need to know about how to remove the handle, and what can go wrong. Finding replacement parts....that's a tricky one. ;)

As for anything else fitting, the only thing that does is earlier Fox Mustang handles. Weasle has one in his car.

A handle from an AOD Mustang will work. They look like ,but it'll work.I think I may have another leather handle out in the garage with the button and spring. If you want it,and I have it,it's yours for $20.00 shipped.Let me know.

meh, i think the spring is what broke if not that white bump rod.  all i know is the button is completely gone and i looked inside and i saw the bump rod, its flush with the "cylndar" where the button goes.  as in the bump rod wouldnt work if the button was there.  i was thinkin more like a regular shift  or perhaps a hurst type pistol grip (dunno how that would look in the car though)  i'll prolly just keep it the way it is till the 5spd conversion.

Back in the day a buddy of mine put a manual shift  on his chevette. We just used an old golf tee cut to the right length to keep the button pushed in. Most of those aftermarket shift s come with shims to make them fit your shifter shaft. Lots ofd them have some sort of screws to hold it on.

Golf tee?It amazes me how the simplest fixes are the last thing I would ever think of.Good idea.I've thought of a different shift handle myself.I may do some experimenting.
