Put a heater core in it soon.If you don't do it while the weather is nice, you will regret it later. It only takes an hour or so.Eric gave me a tip on the 7 or 8 fasteners to remove and pull the dash out far enough to do the job.Easy.Glad to hear the car is finally starting to come around.

As of today, the car is doing weird shiznit. No matter what timing I do, the car still hesitates. Played with the tuning and it STILL heasitates. TWF and how do you cure it. It's also running rich but i can de-tune that. RPM's also bounce between 800-ish and 1100-ish durring idle when warm. Fixing the heater hoses sometime tomorow I hope. Trans lines are behind that but not very far. Other then getting the carb dialed in and little leaking fluids, I should be pretty good

I considered it when I was planning to go carb. But I had everything needed to start carb. So here we are. This motor atleast will be carb till it dies. The next one may or may not be EFI.

How are you setting the timing?  Are you pulling the vacuum line off the distributor and plugging it before putting a light on it?

I pulled off the dizzy but didn't plug it come to think of it. That would be a problem. If it was set at 20* like Scott told me today, what would that be with the Vac advance on it?

20 is way too high.  Total timing should be in the 30's

Is that with or without the Vac line on/connected. And I hate to sound like a total dumbass but thats BTDC not ATDC right.

Just to set this in stone, when I time the car, I dis connect the vac advance from the dizzy and plug it. Then set the timing at 14*. When it's re-connected it should read something like 30*?

yes to your above question.
sorry, i thought you were plugging off the dizzy vac line while you tweeked it.

just so its in writing, here is how the order of events go on a carb'd setup.  like i said,, there are soooo many variables here that you usually just tune it by ear with or without the vac line plugged.

You have to understand that your configuration never came stock on a passanger car , atleast none that i can think of.

-start off with tyipcal factory dialed A/F ratio mixes (ha ha, yeah right!)
-remove dizzy vac line and plug it off
-start car
-tune in 10deg btc
- hook up vac line
-drive
-decide if your having problems
-trial and error your A/F adjustment screws until you weed out problems
-tweeking A/F will directly effect the "perfromance" of your timing.
-continue to tweek between you dizzy and your A/F ratio until you weed out problems.

You can have two identical carbs set exactly the same and put them on your motor , the two will not perform the same.  No two like size/shape/make/model carbs will act the same.

I think perhaps your lacking air coming in.  What CFM was the 4160 carb rated for? Since thats the carb that sat upon the intake you have, consider this fact now that you have that 4bbl holly 7xx on top.

"lean is mean" but too lean is not good.  I would try to lean out the fuel and match up the air in proportion.  Tweek up the fuel from that point as well as air.  next move to the timing.

at what point are the rear throttle plates opening?  There is an old school tool used to measure that in degrees.  If your rear throttle plates are opening late or not in the proper position due to a bent linkage ect ect, that could very well be your hesitation issue.

sorry for the long winded type up, im not a carb guy, you really need to gravitate to someone who does this a lot and finds it really simple.  I just know what i know and thats about it.

Ok. I'm trying to answer in order Scott....
When I timed it, I didn't plug the dizzy. totaly slipped my mind

As far as I know, the secondaries don't iopen unless under load. Since I can't "drive" the car, thats hard to test.

According to the holley numbers on the carb, it's a Holley 1850: 4160 series 600 CFM carb. My dad is back in town for a while, he's an old holley guy. After it's timed ( again.... ) then I'll have him play with it.

see, that's just it, the secondary should kick in either at a certain degree of angle applied to the primary (linkage controled) or a parameter of vac presure.,,or both.

also, if that carb has been jetted, there is another variable.

someone feel free to jump in,, Tom? Nick? Carm?

Did you not unplug the vacuum line or do you mean you didn't plug it off after unplugging it?  If you failed to cap it off no big deal, it wont hurt anything.

If you did fail to unplug it then your base timing is somewhere around 10 degrees ATDC.

Also pull your dizzy cap off and check the mechanical advance.  If it sat in a junkyard for a while it may be seized.  Also put a vacuum pump on the vacuum advance and see if it will pull vacuum.  cheap way put your mouth on it and suck. :D  But honestly if you don't have a vacuum pump, I've diagnosed a few bad vacuum advances the hard way.

If you set base timing with the vacuum advance hooked up then your base timing is ATDC, very bad.

If your vacuum advance is busted then you will have nothing but base timing at any engine RPM that has engine vacuum.

If your mechanical advance is seized, at high engine RPM's you will be at base timing.

Either of these situations will cause the car to run like total ASS.

Also forget about the carb for now.  If it runs then work on eliminating all the ignition variables.
