gas consumption

I have an 88tbird with a 90 5.0 from a mustang in it. Recently about 6 months or so the car was really using gas. And the cats get so hot you can hardly touch the metal down by the shifter. It has an after market hi flow exhaust which I am thinking about removing for an off road h-pipe, but how or where would you start trouble shooting this problem. It looses conserderable power once it warms up. If I am 1/4 tank or below it starts vapor locking (probably due from the cats being so hot and cooking the gas line). No smelly egg smell in the exhaust. No check engine light (could be burnt out, I'll have to check that). A little history, it did have a nasty intake leak which I fixed during the summer, maybe about 6 months ago or more. I think I fixed it... anyway it got to using less gas after that fix but it still sucks in the gas. Anywho... it was suggested that maybe I plugged up the cats from it running rich from before... and then the cats got hot and ruined the o2 sensors. It does some serious 'searching' when I am just idling and it is warmed up. Suggestions please? Thanks.

It very well could be bad cats and O2 sensors. The cats get wicked hot no matter what anyway.I run an off road X-Pipe from Pypes, and the car is great. It may help you to get rid of those cats and free up the exhaust, also, replace the old O2 sensors as well.My two cents.
