1.94/1.54 valves w/SO pistons? October 16, 2006, 12:15:06 AM I've got the stock HO cam. Anyone know if 1.94/1.54 valves will clear the SO pistons? Quote Selected
1.94/1.54 valves w/SO pistons? Reply #1 – October 16, 2006, 12:28:19 PM I'm using a stock ho cam with the stock so motor (except intake and computer) without any problems. I have had this done for about 5 years. Quote Selected
1.94/1.54 valves w/SO pistons? Reply #2 – October 16, 2006, 02:12:42 PM I know stock heads with 1.78/1.45 valves clear just fine ... My question was about 1.94/1.54 valves... Quote Selected
1.94/1.54 valves w/SO pistons? Reply #3 – October 16, 2006, 03:34:03 PM I think you need notched pistons. If I remember correctly 1.94/1.54 valves barely clear stock HO pistons. Quote Selected
1.94/1.54 valves w/SO pistons? Reply #4 – October 16, 2006, 03:58:28 PM Gut feeling - you'll be fine. Lift and duration on the H.O. cam aren't so crazy that piston to valve clearance is a huge concern. Stock specs are .444" lift and 266* advertised duration on the intake and exhaust.BUTThere are so many factors at play here, you MUST check piston to valve clearance before running it. Depends on the head casting you use, and if they are inline valve or offset. Depends on the deck height of the block and heads (there are tolerances here), thickness of the head gasket, installing the cam straight up or advanced/retarded, etc etc etc...Not to mention, I know several Mustang stock-class racers that get their hands on every stock Mustang cam they can find, because some of them have "advantageous" grinds. Different suppliers and tolerances over the 10 or so years the H.O. was made resulted in quite a few subtle differences. So to finish - you can put it in there but you'll need to check piston to valve clearance before you start the engine. 1.94/1.54 valves w/SO pistons? Reply #5 – October 31, 2006, 03:20:24 PM Yeah, are you just changing the valves? If so then if they are exactly as long as you existing ones they'll be fine. Now then if you're swaping heads you need to be extra careful, but either way check the clearance w/ clay on the pistons. Not sure what you're doing though. Quote Selected
1.94/1.54 valves w/SO pistons? Reply #6 – October 31, 2006, 03:59:21 PM Far as i know the only heads that will clear are twisted wedge due to there canted valve design. Quote Selected

Thanks for confirming that for me. I was going to put my aluminum GT40's on my SO piston engine but I decided to play it safe and buy some E7's... Looks like the Y303's will be going up for sale some time this winter. Quote Selected
1.94/1.54 valves w/SO pistons? Reply #9 – November 01, 2006, 12:37:43 AM I have a set of nicely ported E7's with stock valves layin here in my garage that I ran on a SO flattop engine and it was really strong. I think they were milled but just very slightly to ensure flatness. Never did try larger valve heads but I doubt theres any more room without having the reliefs in the pistons. Quote Selected
