Fuel Filter Relocation

I looked all over and didn't see a thread about it, but it's obvious this has been discussed before.

Just wondering what you guys are doing about the fuel filter relocation on the '83-87ish cars for dual exhaust.

Thanks...

It can usually be moved to the outside of the framerail. Some people have told me it didn't work for them, but it did for me. There was enough slack in the fuel lines to allow it. That's where the filters are on 1987-88 cars anyhow. One of the ends *should* technically be removed and a 90 degree connector installed (line from the tank from the filter). But I got mine to work as stock.

Good deal.  I'll try that tonight.

If that doesn't work, what are people doing for Plan B?

Thanks,
Danny

Running skinny lers. ;)

Also...I discovered that header tape is usually needed around the fuel lines, or else the heat will melt the lines. And yes, I found that out the hard way.

When I was 16 and dumb as a rock, I cut the stock plastic lines going into and out of the filter, moved it to the side of the tank, and connected everything back up with high-pressure EFI-spec rubber fuel line and EFI hose clamps.  Not such a great idea on non-barbed plastic fuel lines, 45psi, and hanging right over the ler.

This was on the light blue car in my intro thread btw...

Thanks for your help, Eric.  I dig that Cougar.  I've never seen anything like it.

The ed thing has a fuel pump there.

Plan B, here we come. :)

Looks like it will fit above and behind the rear axle, just in front of the gas tank.  A section of 3/8" hose from the tank to the pump and a slight re-routing of the original lines and I think I can get it all to work.

Just gotta keep it off the control arms and route the line out of the way of the exhaust...

If anyone has any advice, speak now - I'm cutting it tonight. :D

Oh I wish I thought of this earlier but I think since you have CFI in your 83 you have a 2 pumps: 1 in the tank and an external pusher pump. Oh and you have the py EEC-III:pbb: :sorry:

so to put duals on a 87/88 you dont need to relocate the filter?

No. In fact, 88's with 5.0's had duals from the factory... well, duals from the cat back, anyway. Fake duals, really :pbb:

Lesser Known fact....  88's also have the correct 1/4 inch brake line running front to back for the TC axle swap.

Kinda tough to cut the original plastic line and get one in there.

It's mostly done, I just need to put it together and see if it leaks.  I was too busy picking up this BITCHIN Mustang II in Kansas (1100 miles round trip) and then the NFL was calling yesterday...

I'll finish it up tonight.

i really like how in the mid to late 70s companies tried to revive the sports car thing and made, if anything, some nice lookers, though they were sapped for power. i remember the first time i saw a pic of the '74 mustang ii "ghia" coupe. i nearly shat my pants. but the cobra version, i look at and say "THAT is a mustang". and i can just tell that one's been warmed over. if not i bet you will...

BTW --- i those wheels look GREAT on it.
