Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #1 – January 01, 2005, 09:43:18 PM Just about the ugliest vehicle I've seen in some time.. but it could be interesting, apparently being modular and all that.I don't really care for the website there.. a little too flashy and a bit lacking on easily-accessible solid info. Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #2 – January 01, 2005, 10:01:13 PM I like the roadster, and the 2 years of Envi. Sci. in college has me liking that car Quote Selected

Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #4 – January 02, 2005, 01:24:38 PM well yeah that's all it would be for me.. it would save a tonne on gas and insurance and for a brand new car the price is fairly cheap.. obviously i wouldn't be selling the 2 Cougars to get this car.. but this would make a pretty good daily driver. Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #5 – January 02, 2005, 11:45:27 PM That thing is a death trap here. I value my life too much to want a car that small when Tahoes, Rams, F150s and Sequoia's roam this land. That one can stay in Europe...I'd be in a Scion xB first. Quote Selected
Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #6 – January 03, 2005, 02:36:50 AM I was going to say: How about a new Yugo instead? They were rumored to be in the US market for the '05 model year. http://yusa-export-import-mgt.com/yugoslaviaexports4.htmBUT I just found another site saying that the plan of importing them was dropped. Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #7 – January 03, 2005, 04:11:53 AM well we have them here and if people that drive them dont mind being my crumple zone the more power to them.I dont know how they passed the crash safty tests. Come on car like that would just get punted off the road and if it got hit by anything larger then a Honda i would rather take my chances running in trafic then driving around in that go-cart with a roof.but hey what can i say i drive a Cougar :) Quote Selected
Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #8 – January 03, 2005, 02:52:56 PM I agree that they will have a hard time here anywhere outside of a crowded urban area. I don't see them holding their own on a freeway either. I imagine it could be an interesting proposition getting passed by a fast-moving 18-wheeler. The fact that they may get "punted" away rather than trying to hold their ground might be better off for them, however. I'd rather get bopped out of the way than run over. Quote Selected
Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #9 – January 03, 2005, 03:12:53 PM Face it, it's our attitudes that will keep cars like this from making it here.I've driven small cars for most of my time driving. In fact, these T-birds are probably the largest cars I've owned that I could drive daily. (my '64 Galaxie and '62 Impala both needed enough work to probably disqualify them as daily drivers.. besides, I was like 16-17 at the time) Been in 3 different accidents in the same '78 Corolla. (rear-ended by an F150, t-boned by a mid-sized car, and hit the back of a lawn mower trailer.. only the last was my fault) Probably could've fixed the car and gone on from the third, except it popped the radiator and I felt it was too banged up at that point to be worth repairing. If you are adverse to small cars, you will always find plenty of reasons as to why they're unsafe. Hell, I drove a '78 Pinto as a teen and had to listen to endless jokes about the gas tank, even though it had been fixed like 2 model years earlier.Fact is, ANY vehicle can get ya killed in the right cirspoogestance. We just recently had some woman get killed in a Lincoln because she pulled out in front of a cement mixer. (hell of a day for the truck driver, it was his first day.. he poured for a jobsite a friend of mine was working on about an hour before the wreck) Would I drive a car like the Smart? Possibly. (although I still think it's ugly as hell) Would I want to drive it over my T-birds? Hell no.. unless I got some crazy job that required so much driving as to make the Smart much much more sensible than either Bird. As it is now, I'm not exactly piling on a hundred miles a day or anything like that. Quote Selected

True, but there are millions of more cirspoogestances for that to happen in a SMART car that wouldn't be applicable in other cars. Better off in a Scion, Hyundai Accent, Focus, etc... Quote Selected
Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #11 – January 04, 2005, 02:10:08 PM I think they're great, for what they're intended. And that's to commute within a city. At least it's RWD. Quote Selected
Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #12 – January 04, 2005, 02:10:46 PM Driving a Smart wouldn't be any different then driving a motorcycle, in the collision perpective. In fact one would be better off in a Smart then on a motorcycle.Personal safety is not on my list of things to look for when I am considering the purchase something. Anything you do in life CAN kill you.. some things just take longer then others.I just like the Smart because it appealed to me this is one of the very few latest cars that has aroused my interest. Don't ask me why, because i'm not really sure why. Quote Selected

Re: what's everyone's opinions on the Smart car Reply #14 – January 04, 2005, 07:28:55 PM I have had small cars and big cars,I would still rather be in a big car over anything smaller then a CRX.Smart car is ok for what it is, I can see it being used for Campus rent-a-cops :) Quote Selected
