why would this happen

well the car(mustang) has had a leak(s) and have gotten worse. and i needed to crawl under it and change the oil and filter i just kept adding it. the trans leaks and i know why, but have refused to do anything with it only take the trans out and say good bye. but the engine never did leak. we thought it was the rear main seal till it was cleaned up to chace the leak. but it's coming from the oil pan. (what else is new ) only one side passenger side so i figured why not try to tighten the bolts. most only took half to a quater turn bust some took like one full turn.

why would the bolts just strat coming out. and has anyone elses ever seen/heard of one side leaking.  i hope it slowed it down till i swap a trans then i'll lift the engine up a bit with a hoist and change the pan gasket

I think its a combination of heat expansion/contraction, vibrations, and deteriorating gaskets.

I had the same thing happen to my old '87 'Bird, and after I tightened 'em the leaks went away. It also seems to happen with valve covers after the car is stored for the winter. On my previous 88 Cougar and 87 Sport and current 88 Base (all 5.0 cars) when I started 'em in the spring the oil was running down onto the exhaust manifolds. A quick tighten of the valve cover bolts fixed it every time. I'm gonna cure that issue soon with the 88 Base with HO valve covers and rubber gaskets...

those valve covers are shagy. if you clean them up rite or paint them rite

cork gaskets. They had been using them since the 30's. It's about time they did away with them.

some things the cork works beter i think. like on the tranny pan i like cork beter. but the stang has a 1 peice rubber seal i belive
