speedo question

ok I just ran across the section on cool cats where you can make the speedo read higher. It doesnt look hard at all . What Im wondering is, How do we test the speedo without doing 199 MPH. Does anyone know a way to test the speedo's in our cars with the dash out of the car or at least without the car having to be moving? I know on the older cars with the cables we could just hook a drill up to the cable and turn it that way to see if the speedo went up. is there some way of doing something similar on ours since they run off an electrical signal from the wires coming off the speed sensor in the tranny. any help would be great and if it works I'll be extremely happy.

Take it out on the interstate and get it up to 86 MPH.  If it reads 86, then it will go to 199.  It's not like you could actually go 199 :grinno:  FYI:  It does work, quite nicely I might add.  I did it earlier this week.  I only took it to 88 'cause I'm a wuss and don't want another speeding ticket.

ok the speedo is out of the cougar that Im parting I didnt want to take the one out of my car and do it with fear that  I was gonna do something wrong and screw it up being as I have the fully digital dash and the speedometer isnt really interchangable between the base and full digital. Im needing a way to check and make sure it works without rewiring my dash again. So I need a way to check it to make sure it'll work without putting it in a car.but I do like the idea of seeing if it reads over 85 on the interstate

Several ways to test, depending on what you have/want to do:

The first two options you need to cut the mate connectors from the dash of a donor car to enable you to power the cluster up on the workbench & connect to it.

1) Pull the vehicle speed sensor out of the tranny & wire it to the cluster & use a drill as u mentioned to turn the sensor.

2) A cheap pulse generator can also be used instead of the drill & sensor, feeding the generator signal into the VSS pin.  You have to play with the voltage levels & frequency a bit to get the cluster to think it is a valid VSS signal.  Again, you also need the s connectors to hook up to the cluster.

3) I heard someone just jacked the rear tires & floored it, but sounds kinda scarey to me  :screwy: , but probably because I'm a whimp!

4) I know there are other (s) that will do the mod for $'s for you, as it was on eBay a while ago. Thats not me by the way, I just don't have the time!

5) The mod is pretty simple, so take your time soldering and it will likely work with no problem.

It is interchangeable, but you won't have the economy feature if you use the base speedo on the digital cluster.  I used a full digital speedo on my base cluster, I just cut the extra plastic ribbon that fed the econ component.

well yeah I didnt want to loose that little feature I just got it working right would hate to loose it after braving the cold to hook up the wire for it.

yeah I hoped it could be done like that any chance you know which wires I need to hook up to test that? or anyone know for that matter? I have like 3 of the sensors from tranny's so thats no problem as far as jacking the rear tires up and hammering the gas umm no thanks my luck the jack would fall and Id end up parked in the neighbors living room, not a good deal. I have the mod done I just want to test it to see if it worked my poor old tired bird wont hardly do over 85 to see if it did anything anyway but why is a topic for another post lol.

Well, these graphics pale in comparison to Master Blaster  drawings, but I tried,,:

Note the wiring is substantially different between Base & Full Digital clusters, so I showed them both.

Holy Birdshiznit  Batman!!! I gotta hook all those wires to a positive post on a battery??? ummm where's the negative go? Or is the green negative on the battery? Oh and one more question would a 12v DC power supply that plugs into the house wall be big enough to power it? And thanks for the drawing seems simple enough from that thing. Wonder how easy a person could make a setup for testing these things. build a little frame that holds it with the switches for blinkers and stuff to. that way we can test a dash after the mod. could get a whole bunch of them and sell em on ebay or something :grinno:

The other end of the speed sensor goes to ground(12v return)

Yes about any 12v P/S should work, as long as it will make a amp or so....

ok I hooked it up and tried it and found out my drill can only turn it upto around 57 mph any ideas?

Well thats too bad, I know someone else on the board successfully used a drill, so it just must be a lower RPM drill that you are using.

Do you have a dremel tool? It as a very high RPM motor.  Also a lot of cordless drills don't have as much RPM's as those that plug into the wall.

yeah but its cordless too so it probably wont go high enough either
I know it works up to 57 so theoretically it should go all the way to 199

Dude just take it apart and solder a jumper across that W2 connection.  It is way easier to do than you think.
