Seats are in. (Kinda)

Well, I built some brackets out of steel flats and got it all in.  It looks real nice it just sits a little too high for my tastes.  I may see what I can do about that.  Now that I got everything done, I'm stuck on one bolt.  It the bolt near the transmission tunnel on the front on both sides.  I know it's the same bolt to I pulled out but the bolt just falls straight in the floorboard.  I even went to the junkyard and yanked those bolts and they do the same.  While I was there I did find a new seat belt recepticle deal to replace mine so I figured I'd try to make everyone jealous.  Any help is appreciated.

Mmmm.....might have a stripped hole. If you look under the car in that area, you should see a nut that is welded to the floorpan. It's likely that nut is stripped. That's a very common thing to happen with these cars over time; I think the stress of cornering, braking hard, etc. tends to wear down the threads. Not sure if a helicoil or JB Weld would help but those are possibilities. You could always put a new bolt through, and a lock washer and nut under the car, with some threadlocker.

the best way to fix it. I would suggest a fender washer under the lock washer for more surface area to disperse stress on the floorpan.

Well, having not had the time to fix the front bolt with school and such, I just went ahead and kinda half threaded it in.  I know it's dangerous as hell, but I'm willing to risk I won't have an accident in the time that it will take me to get some spare time.  But here's where it gets even better.  I bought some of those cheap racing seats "high quality chinaman made".  So I'm just sitting in the seat, not doing anything stressful to it at all. I'm not leaning back, getting in/out, or reaching for something in the rear, when all of the sudden I'm laying in the floorboard with my back seat as a headrest.  So my buddy grabs the wheel and I scramble back into a half seated position.  I park and low and behold the back of the seat fell off right in the floor.  Now I'm a big guy, and I figured these wouldn't last more than 2-3 years but this is about ridiculous.  I checked it about 10 minutes ago and its the lever mechanism that allows it to tilt.  So not only did I have to take the time to fab up some brackets to fit the power seats, having it sit too high, and too far towards the door with the wheel about 4 inches to the right of where it should be when seated, I now have a broken seat.  I will be looking for a new seat tomorrow and I'm not sure what to do.  I'm thinking of the newer mustang seats as I can find a half decent seat with the seatbealt guides for about 50 a seat.  I was wondering what you guys had done to swap out the power seats.  And, I'd like to know how tough these mustang seats are.  After this incident, I'm pretty sure I would be dead if it weren't for my carpooling buddy.  I suppose I'd rather have 3 bolts in a decent seat than 4 in a seat that could put me into a pole at highway speeds.    Any help I can get would be great appreciated

personaly i like supercoupe seats, someone hear did em in his car and they look good. but they are alot of work. SN95 mustang seats fit well and are a improvment over ours, so they are an easy option to. hopefully later this year i'll be getting my recaros :D

I'm looking at a decent set of cloth seats out of a newer mustang. It's got that little seatbelt deal to keep the belt outta the door which I like, so that's cool. And the junkyard only wants 50 for each seat. I was wondering what to do about the brackets. I'd like to get rid of the power seats as they are old, worn out, and they've already cause me one fire.  I'd prefer not to drill the pan, but I suppose if I have to, I was wondering the correct procedure to do this.

you should be able to find some manual seat tracks and throw those straight in, from another tbird/cougar. As long as you can get the bolts out.

Well, as I found out, the mustang seats fit.  I got them out of a convertible GT.  Nice seats, seem sturdy, almost too comfortable.  I ended up getting the manual seat tracks out of an 85 that had so much ice in the floor it was ridiculous.  I found another 5.0 86 but it almost hurt me just to touch it.  I think I may buy it if he's got the title still.  Oh well, seats are outta the way, now it's on to fixing the console and buying a new lid along with the decal.
