Hit The Jackpot...a few questions...

Ok, I was up at the local Junk Yard today when I stumbled upon a 1987 Cougar, V8. The thing was in almost perfect condition. It was the v8 and had the buttstuffog Cluster in it. Not only that, It had a nice pair of sun visors which I swiped, as well as a working Glove-box latch as well. After taking those items, I noticed the Leather seats were in perfect condition as well. However, I did not have the time, tools, or money to pull both of them out.

At that point, I turned my attention the the buttstuffog Cluster and got to thinking. Would it work in my v6?

So, my question is this. Would taking the buttstuffog Cluster out of a V8 Cougar, work in my V6 Thunderbird? Keep in Mind that I had already re-wired everything and stuck a Turbo Cluster in place of the base panel. Everything on that works, sans the Tach. As a matter of fact, the only reason I was going to yank the Cougar v8 buttstuffog Cluster was because I had heard there was no need to do rewiring to get the Tach to work. I understand it might not be perfectly acurate, but since I have already stuck a Turbo Cluster in the my car, can I simply put in the buttstuffog Cluster out of that Cougar in it and get everything to work?

(Yes, I followed the re-wiring guide to get the Turbo Cluster to work in my car, but didn't attempt to get the Tach to work. Would the Tach on the v8 cluster work?)

would have to be recalibrated in about the same wzy

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

wzy!!!???

What in god's name does that mean?

I probably complicated what I was trying to say be repeating everything over and over so let me try to get this out very simply:

I had a Base Cluster. I took it out, rewired everything according to that guide on Coolcats.com, and put a Turbo Cluster in the car. Today, while pilaging through a junk yard, I stumbled upon a rare V8 buttstuffog Cluster in a Cougar. I want to put that in my car, but want to know if any rewiring would have to be done? Or does the V8 buttstuffog cluster only have one input slot like the Turbo Cluster does?

No rewiring would be necessary for what you want to do.
...But the tach still won't work. The TC and V8 clusters are almost identical except for the boost gauge and firm ride light, and teh tachs are calibrated differently. If you didn't run the wire for the tach for your TC cluster it won't work in the V8 one.

Just a note: If you now have, or ever plan on installing, a remote starter, you'll need a tach wire inside the car anyway

My bad...I thought we had this discussion on the old board before. IIRC there is a resistor change needed for an 8-cylinder tach to work on a V6 car (similar to the 4-to-8 cylinder tach mod) but I don't remember the resistor value.

From the '84 shop manual:
The standard 6000 RPM Tach has a 4/6/8 mode switch.
The 2.3L turbo 8000 RPM Tach has no mode switch.
The 5.0L HO 7000 RPM Tach has no mode switch.
This covers all Fords so all these may not have been in T-Bird/Cougar.

Wish it was that easy....there is no 4-6-8 switch on the Cougar/T-Bird tach. I believe the Mustangs had one though.

And the old board spoke thusly:

Re: tach accuracy

When I still had the 4cyl tach in my TC after the engine swap, it read double the RPM's. I have found there is only one resistor that is different in the Turbo Coupe vs Sport tach. It is located near the minus (blue) wire to the tach movement. It is 100k ohm.
Changing it to a 75k for a 6 cyl or to a 50k for a 8 cyl should be close.

I'll get a pix up to show the resistor.  [/COLOR]
