Maybe thier estimate involves pulling the motor.

And replacing all the gaskets.

Ok, as a previous performance shop owner, 1g for a 5.0 timing chain is a HUGE ripoff! I used to do it for $425 using a GOOD chain and gears, like Crane for instance. I would say if this guy doesn't do it for that or less, go ELSEWHERE!! He's either trying to screw you or doesn't have a clue on how to work on a 5.0. eother spells disaster.

For reference, this can be done with a fairly basic set of tools. Some sockets, wrenches, and extensions and your set. If this fool has air tools, he can do it in about 2 hours TOPS.

Was thinking did you tell him what year it was? That could be for a MN12 or *gasp* a FWD.

This does not sound good to me, or right.  I'm starting to wonder about your repair shop.  I told you they would add on other stuff later but an oil pump is way out there.  If they want 1g for a timing chain, how much for the pump?

I'm gonna guess this guy wants $550 for the pump.  Anybody else care to give a guess on this?

Im not the smartest guy around, but can someone explain to me how a flaky oil pressure sending unit translates into new timing gear set? If the sender is bad...ummm...unscrew it and replace it with a new one? Even on my Buick if the sender is bad, theres no way in hell that Id need to change the timing geat set.

Before that yo-yo touches the oil pump, Id hook up a oil pressure gauge first.

Sounds like to me you are being taken for a ride my friend.
