check engine light wiring

would anybody know how to wire the 87-88 buttstuffog cluster, to make the check engine light functional? i have an A9L computer. i see there are two wires from the eec, that goes to the code reader port thingy, but dont know how to get the light to come with the key.

okay, i have the diagram, that shows the two wires from the eec, that goes to the diagnostic connector. they are a black w/ white strip, and a tan wire. on the back of my base cluster, there are two wires on ONE pin. black w/ blue stripe and tan. the other wire is a red w/ yellow stripe. these two pins(three wires) power the light bulb for the check engine.

when i checked the black w/ white and tan wires with a meter(one pin), they showed 12.?? volts. making me think i have stored codes, but i didnt have any before the cluster swap.

it's too late to take another look, as i would have to take it the dash apart again. ill have another look tomorrow, but im hoping someone here can shed some light on this.

The bulb operates by feeding it 12v(any hot source with ign on, but pins 37/57 is a good source), and connecting other lead to pin 17 of the EEC(the tan wire in your diagram)...

so what do i do with the black wire w/ blue stripe? nothing? is this the same as the black wire w/ white stripe?

the black wire w/ blue stripe is on the same pin as the tan wire behind the cluster.

the black w/ white stripe, comes from the eec to the diagnostic connector.

If you had the base cluster in there before, the needed wires should already be in the plugs. No digging around tracing wires from the EEC to anywhere.

The bulb would have originally gotten power from incoming wire A6 (Grey plug, red/yellow, fuse #18), and been grounded by the EEC or the ignition switch "start" position via outgoing wire A7 (tan to test plug, tan changes to black/blue at ignition switch, yours is all black/blue?).

Does your new cluster have the Check Engine light connected through the plastic overlay, or is it the separate bulb/wires/plug style?

That will be the "Signal Return" from the various sensors, and has nothing to do with the light.

I have another wire list here (possibly wrong) that shows a black/white from B18 (brown plug) as the speed sensor ground.

it has a sperate brown 8 pin(?) plug, near the top of the cluster. two wires from that attach to the bulb's socket. ill have to check the colors of the other wires when i get home.

There seems to be a couple of different TC clusters. The one I have doesn't use a Check Engine light, just Check Turbo where the Engine light is on my 2 Sport clusters.

Viewed from rear:

TC cluster:
Window: Turbo  Brakes  xxxx  xxxx ..........  xxxx Belts xxxx
Wired:      Y        Y        N      N                N    Y    N

Sport:

Wired:      Y        N      Y      N                  N      Y    N

You must have a early TC cluster(does it have a ride controll light)?. A spare '88 TC cluster I have looks identical to your picture(which I assume is the sport cluster), and has same color wires on the two sockets.

That pic is the only one I have of an buttstuffog rear with the plug.
It's definitely a TC... see the turbo gauge nipple?

The TC cluster I have has no ride light, and no plug.
It looks almost exactly like the Sport, just different bulb placement.

*Edit*
TC housing part number = E5SF.....
Sport = E8SF.....
Looks like the TC was made in 85, Sport in 88?

My TC cluster is identical to the first one you posted and has a E8SF part no. I also had a '88 sport cluster, but the tach is in my TC and a freind needed the printed circuit.

that is the exact same one i have. that little brown plug has two wires for the ride light, and two wires for the check engine light. the four wires are on the right on the pic.

and two wires for the check engine light.
Then it should be easy enough to hook up (or at least to test).

One wire goes to the fuse #18 circuit...
Top left plastic contact, next to the plug, or at the speedo (far left screw), or the tach (upper right nut thingy), or somehow between the two bulbs at the lower left if your wiring goes that way.

The other wire goes to the EEC test circuit...
Your original grey plug, position A7 (tan & black/blue wires).
