Removing starter motor...

For all you guys with a 302 who have removed the engine before or even just the starter for it's own sake...how did you manage it?  The upper bolt on that motor has been holding me up for days!  The only tool that can operate in that clearance is a stubby wrench and that can't even seem to maintain it's grip on the bolt.  Course it would help if I could see the thing but that won't happen.  Last night I doused it with liquid wrench and left it to soak so maybe today I'll get lucky but I'm not optimistic

long extension about 3 feet, lay under car with head near starter and feet on driver side. Stick extension just above motor mount with right hand and guide it to the bolt with the left hand. Once you do it you will be changing starters in less than 10min...

Yup... Thats how I do it... You can also get a old time starter wrench on the top bolt. It's a U shaped wrench that curves around the starter..

pssh it was the same as in my dads station wagon. Life time warrenties are awsome. We have gone through like 6 starters. They dont need to know that they are all from diffrent cars though. My dad can change the starter in the parking lot of autozoone without any jacks on his station wagon in about 5 mins.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

hey now..... I actually watched them "rebuild" one. The reason why my dads station wagon kept eating them is he has a blown head gasket and water would drip on them along with a lot of oil and stuff. All that they did was cleaned it off really good and test it.

I put together 3 extensions with a swivel on the end and it worked like a charm.  The motor is out.  All that's left are the engine mounts and transmission bolts.  The engine comes out tonight!  Or my name isn't Janet Jackson! :tg:

LOL! Oh, it's nothing personal bro...hardly any parts stores have "good" parts anymore. Failure rate on a lot of things have been high for me, and AZ is neither better nor worse than others IMO. I just thought 6 starters in a row was abnormally high, until it was explained why.
