What is this noise???

I wasnt sure which forum to post this in, cuz i dont really know what the problem is with my bird....

start the car up, wait about a minute. while it's idling, a whistle/squeal noise emerges, and pretty much stays. its bothering me. at first i thought it was a bearing or a belt, but as you rev the engine, the noise disappears. let it idle again and it comes back.

my uncle suggested that maybe a vaccum hose is either a little loose, or maybe a little crack in it. he says that could cause a whistle with the little bit of air coming in when its idiling, but when you give it gas theres enough air coming in that it seals right up.

anybody got any ideas? ever had a similar problem???

vaccum release for the e-brake? Cap off the port near the brake booster name "B/R" see if it goes away

Get a 2-foot piece of flexy rubber (vacuum) hose, stick one end in your ear, and move the other end around the engine area while it's squealing.

Does it squeal immediately when the engine's already warmed up and restarted, or does it take a minute then too? Some vacuum-operated systems are locked out until it's warmed up... EGR, smog air pump and diverter valve. Lots of those skinny little nylon vac hoses under the hood that can crack.

whether its warmed up or not, it seems that it always takes a minute or two after you start it to start making the noise.

but you think its a good theory then?
we're gonna check it out one night this week coming. i just hope by driving on it im not gonna wreck anyting

Either that or the belt.
I assume you've at least opened the hood and verified that's where the noise is coming from?

yeah well, the most i can confirm right now with out getting my face ripped off is that it is coming frokm the powersteering pump area, or below. i thought it was a bearing, but i listened with a screwdriver and they all sound great. i dont think its the belt. the powersteering belt DOES need to be replaced, its cracking, but i dont think thats it. however, i havent had the chance ot get UNDER the car and look around.

Dribble some water on the serpentine belt and see if the noise goes away. If it does you have narrowed it down to the belt.
Reversing the belt so it runs in the opposite direction sometimes cures it for awhile.

My parent's taurus had a squeal...the idler pulley went...pretty nasty I tell ya
