My $50 TRX Wheel/Tire score

These were summer wheels and tires for a 84 Cougar XR-7 and when the car sold it was wearing its winter wheels and tires.  He forgot about these for a number of years, put ad on CL and they came home with me for $50.  Perfect tires, stored in a clean dry temperature controlled cellar.  Tire shop owner said they should be fine for local driving and shows.  I have a spare set of mint tires for it as well.  Car looks way better in my opinion than the polycast's she was wearing before.

Congratulations my friend. That is an awesome score! Best looking TRX wheels of all of them and a must for all 4 eyed original T-Bird and Cougars.

I always thought TRXs look awesome, but I was always afraid to buy any because of the tires. Congrats.

That is an awesome score.

I like the TC snowflakes my '83 came with, but I entertain TRX fantasies often.

Of course, I just want to cut the barrels off a set and weld / bolt them in to normal barrels so I can run normal tires, but it is a fantasy, after all.

Your car looks like a twin to mine, except yours has no rust!... I came here looking for info on the TRX tires, as I have just put mine back on the car after 20 years in storage.  The TRX wheels on my '83 Heritage were taken off in favor of 14 inch steel wheels back in the 90's.  I have always hated the hubcaps, and finally decided to put the TRX wheels back on.  I love the way the car looks with the TRX package, but I recall the constant struggle with those  wheels leaking!

What does the inside of your car look like?  The outside looks great!

Options for the TRX are as follows:

Thunderbird specific TRX rims need new tires available from pen 15er tire at very high prices, which are priced beyond all those out there with anything but show cars.
However, they are now re-popping the Mustang versions in a standard 15 or 16" combo with standard tires if you want something close.  Because of the re-pop's there might be some good deals on the real TRX tires as many owners don't need them any longer.  There is a also an option to cut the centers out of stock TRX rims and use them as a center cap or overlay on a standard wheel as a member in here has done.  Its a sucky reality if you love these wheels.  I have a really good set of tires on mine and a 2nd set to go on when needed too.  There are deals out there if you look hard.  Thanks for the kind words about my 83 lets see yours regardless of condition.  Every Bird is beautiful.

Your car looks like it just drove off the showroom floor!  Very nice!  Have you restored it, or is that all original?  If that's an original interior, nice job keeping it that clean!

Here's mine.  I just put the wheels back on Sunday, and the driver side pic was taken before I had the correct lugs and center caps.  As you can see, mine is a bit rougher than yours.  I have a quote of $4500 to paint it, and I'm considering that.... The paint guy says he'd want to take all of the moulding off and not replace it right now.  I'm not sure how I feel about that.  This car has been in my family since 1986.

....

Here's mine.

Looks like a highly loaded 83!  Leather interior, dual power seats, vent windows, trip minder, etc. The rust doesn't look that bad, keep in mind it's a 33 year old car. ;) If you do remove the moulding, be very careful, NOS or good used is very hard to find.

Good luck with it and keep us posted on your progress.

You can remove the moldings with out bending them up. You have to use a very wide putty knife and hammer it from top to bottom through the double sided tape holding the moldings on. That's the only way to keep them from bending up. If you pull them off or try to remove the moldings from front to back you will bend them up. Then just se the double sided tape off with a razor blade and apply new double sided tape. DO NOT remove the metal backing as it keeps the moldings the correct length. If you remove the metal backings on the molding they will shrink in length from 1/4"-3/4 inches (the door moldings more than the smaller pieces).

As far as restoring the chrome strip on the moldings 3m has you covered. You can purchase a product called "metalized film tape" https://www.grainger.com/product/3M-Silver-Polyester-Metalized-15C477?functionCode=P2IDP2PCP

It looks just like chrome and is outdoor use rated.
