Leather wrapped Turbo Coupe steering wheel?

Just wondering but has anyone had an 85-88 Turbo Coupe steering wheel leather wrapped? I have a Turbo Coupe steering wheel but I'm reluctant to replace my factory steering wheel with it as it is not leather wrapped like the LX steering wheel. I'm thinking of having a local upholstery shop wrap the wheel in black leather but I'm not sure how it would look. I'm hopping someone here has attempted what I want to do just to get an idea of how the finished product would look.

I have had the same question in my mind for years. I prefer the feel of a leather-wrapped wheel, however I do wish the rim on my original A-Frame wheel was thicker like the Turbo Coupe's wheel is. I never liked the feel of the Turbo Coupe steering wheel because of it not being leather wrapped.

From personal experience, I would not recommend having a local upholstery shop do it unless they are well versed in doing this type of work. Many years ago I went to a couple of shops near me asking them to re-wrap my original steering wheel and only one out of three that I asked would even attempt it. She did an OK job, and definitely better than what I could have if I had attempted, but it is just lacking the OE quality that I was hoping for. If I were to do it again, I would go through someone that specializes in re-doing steering wheels. Especially given the design of the TC wheel as there is no definite transition between the rim and the spokes.

+1 On CraftCustoms. They recovered a tri-spoke Mustang GT wheel (84-86) 3years ago. Did an awesome job. They also dyed the center horn pad as well. Turn around was a few weeks... Don't remember the exact amount but was well satisfied with the results. I think you can request a little more "padding" if you want the wheel thicker.

I may try the local upholstery shop and see what they say. I want the tight OEM style stitching on the wheel. I'm going to talk to the local guy and see if he can pull that off. He does some very high end stuff so I'm hoping he can handle the project: http://www.ogdentopandtrim.com/
