102.9 cents/liter ($3.22US/gal). Time for a new ride

I've been wanting a bicycle for a long time to help get myself back into shape (I've put on 60 pounds over the past five years  ), and the latest price increase pushed me over the edge. I just bought this new toy today.

Actually, it had little to do with gas prices - it was more to do with the 50% off sale. Regular $499.99, on sale for $249.99 at Canadian Tire. It's a Supercycle (Canadian Tire's own brand) but it's made by either Schwinn or Raleigh. This is, by far, the nicest bicycle I have ever owned. It's got dual suspension, aluminum frame, aluminum rims, 21 speeds with some really fancy shifters, and, get this: DISC BRAKES! I've never seen a bicycle with disc brakes! Well, front disc brakes anyway...

Pics (I haven't even rode it yet, I bought it on the way to the cottage and took pics as soon as I got it out of the truck:

Very nice bike, sound like you got one hell of a deal.  So gas broke the $1.00 mark in the Atlantic region?  Luckly we are still at .899 cents, but the rumors are it is going up here.

wow... Nice bike.... for 250$....

It remember me my Old GT in alluminium with disc brake, Rock Shox Mag21 front suspenstion.... only the disc brake cost me over 1200$ at the time (11yr ago) and almost 800$ just for the frame all mounted with XTR....

With that crazy gaz price, you can be sure that i will make good use of my 76L of gaz still in my totalled cats tank.....

The girlfriend is happy for free gaz..... at least she pay the mint for after siphoning.... :giggle:

Yep, it went up last Thursday. First time ever over a buck here, but now that barrier's been broken I expect it'll stay there. I gotta tell ya, 15 city MPG in the T-Bird is kinda sucking right now, and 10-12 MPG (highway, I only drive the Dak to the cottage) in the Dakota is REALLY sucking. I think the Dak is gonna be put up for sale very soon, to be replaced with a Volvo 7 or 9 series wagon. Preferrably a 760 turbo/5-speed. Decent mileage, decent power, RWD, dead reliable, lotsa space for hauling stuff to & from the cottage, and something that would relieve the 'Bird of its "Daily Driver" status. And aside from T-Birds and Cougars, nothing is cooler than Volvo wagons.

The 'Bird is now at about 92,000 km (about 56k miles), so I wanna retire it to "fun" car status ASAP to keep that dreaded sixth digit from appearing for as long as possible. And once I'm no longer relying on it as a daily driver I may finally get to do some stuff to it.

56k miles? Is that a typo, for you to be worried about retiring it to "fun status"? If not, what the hell? I feel like I got a freakin' steal to get my '89 Mark with only about 90,500 miles on it. (for comparison, my mother's '98 ZX2 has about 80,000 miles on it) Would I retire it? OH HELL NO. In fact, I'd like to hop it up just a little bit. (KB blower and new exhaust, and that's just about it outside of structural work) And I don't even give 'em up for the winter like you do.

Nope, no typo. The car had 47k miles when I bought it, and is now up to 56k miles. The thing is, even though 100,000 km's is only 62,000 miles, it still looks like "100000" on the odometer. I'll cry when that happens.

I know the car isn't ready for "retirement", but I feel guilty racking too many miles up on it. And the gas mileage sucks. I wanna get a car that I can put a daily beating on, while saving my T-Bird for cruising (and getting some work done, like paint, the 11" brake upgrade, the HO/T5 thing, etc). I can't really do anything major to it while I'm relying on it as daily transportation. The Dakota is not suitable for that task owing to its REALLY bad mileage and the fact that it's, well, an old Dakota (with over 300,000 km and no A/C). Don't worry, the car isn't going out to pasture just yet, it's just gonna have a more leisurely lifestyle :D

, that's something unique I've never seen too, disc brakes.  The bikes that my girlfriend and I bought over a year ago (and have ridden no more than three times) were similar as far as features go.  They had a tubular frame that wasn't so much round as it was oval and teardrop shape, as well as being... just funky. 21 speed, dual suspension.  It didn't have the normal bike frame shape, we'll just say that.  Of course, I didn't have the cool discs but it did have everything else.  I think maybe tommorow I'll see if I can talk her into going for a ride.

Disconnect the speedometer and problem solved.....

My car shows 45691 kilometers and resets to the same number every 30 kilometers.......Forever Young !!!

Just kidding, Mr.  It´s a good idea to maintain the car with low mileage , preferably under 100,000 kms. At 2020, you will be nearly at 150,000 or less, and if we have luck, our cars will be worth very much and we´ll be laughing at all the guys that considered our cars " defased, ugly, cheap, , old" Etc.... . I am considering to get an econobox and let the cougar be "My Sunday Car" or my "real car", and the econobox only for simple and cheap transportation.

Of course, the bycicle gets usually 20 MPG......but assuming that the water is cheap and the "engine" is in good shape it will get beter mileage  ....

I used to love my BMX bikes and until I turned 16 and got a car I'd drive othing else. All of my BMX's had to have chrome frames, plastic mag wheels, and all of the pegs, rotors, etc for trick riding. Unfortunately, 16 was 17 years ago, and now my 6'3", 260-pound frame atop a 20" BMX would be cruel. I'd look like Homer trying to do Krusty's bicycle stunt, for God's sake...

Unfortunately the "engine" is already tired and worn out. Hopefully that will change - one of the few cases where an "engine" gets better as miles are added to it :D

Finally picked up my Sprint on june 8th, couldnt handle the t-birds 7mpg and leaky tranny seals anymore especially since I got working f/t downtown. Put 1400 km on it and only paid $100 for it so I figure every time I drive it now i'm making money. The little 3 cylinder only runs on two due to a burnt valve and you cant pass anything in it  but for the mielage it gets i'll deal with it  :D  besides everyone loves it after I did a lil bodywork on the drivers side, cut polish/waxed it, spray painted the hubcaps, then added duct tape racing stripes and a coffee can exhaust tip :tg: mustang guys think its great while camEro guys pretend they cant see or hear it as I rev at them :p but you can sense the fear in their hearts lol and no it doesnt have door handles or an ignition.... but it was $100! WTF do you expect! I'm actually considering fixing it up now rather than driving it in to the ground as I had first planed, gonna finally have money to blow on the t-bird now aswell so I figure its a win-win
