We used similar for fire starters (we used wax, instead of petroleum jelly).  Going camping and/or hunting?

I used to collect pinecones in the fall and gather a couple of trashbags full then use them for fire starters

I do it old school Boy Scout style........ Magnesium flint, and dryer lint.  Never failed me, in snow or pouring rain.
