Velocity car builds

I watch Velocity all the time and i am amazed at how fast they build those cars. They must only last paint wise for a couple of years. They do not bake out the plastic or let it settle. That is very important and naturally they are all professionals. Or maybe not all are professionals? Dont get me wrong they build some great stuff and not knocking them . But why is it every time they first try and start the engines they never start the first time. Fire spews out of the carbs and endless cranking. Then they dig in to the engine like army ants . They pull the valve covers check the valve lash talk to each other then finally figure out the Distributor is in wrong. They fix it during the commercial and all is good in the world. I personally have an ongoing bet with people that my engines start on the first crank. Me and my dad used to do this all the time after a rebuild. It just puzzles me that all these professionals can not have a first time start on a fresh engine. Just something i noticed not being critical but just makes me laugh a lot. Your thoughts gentleman

I've personally seen a car that was built for a television show that is no longer on the air about a year after it was done.  The show had a decent following when it was on and the shop had a lot of high end clientele.  I was not impressed.....

It's all for TV and all about "the show". Personally, I can't stand "Overhaulin". Foose might be a talent, but he's become over-commercialized, and it's always the same , with an ugly set of his wheels on it. Still not as bad as the Coddington stuff. Yuck. The annoying "Fast and Loud" guys are just that...annoying.

I just caught a couple episodes of "Bitchin Rides" today, and actually kind of like it. I'm sure it'll jump the shark at some point too.

at least on street outlaws these guys have real issues with their cars that stump them for days or weeks at a time.

I just think it is so funny when they try and start those cars and they send a 6 FOOT flame into the air. Clearly the timing is off. And if you look at them they stand back while cranking and flogging the throttle so it will start. It is so clear that they expect it to do that. The other night one of FOOSES guys said that is why i always stand back. Dont you think they would at least try starting it during the commercials and fix the issue before they go on the air. It is so funny i laugh like crazy

Bitchin' Rides is a good show.  I like Fast N Loud mainly because the guys in the show are funny and seem to be true car guys.  I just get tired of the fake deadlines that have to be met and of course EVERY time there's some last minute problem that pops up.

The only Fast and Loud one I have liked here lately is the one showing off Aaron's Falcon on the Pike's Peek challenge.  Other than that after the first year I don't care for it much.  I like the one with Jesse James' shop in Austin but it was on for one year and then gone.  But I have to say that I agree with Tom, hell they are always stuffing in a crate motor of some kind in these build cars and they still have issues...guess that is why it got donated.

One word..............Drama.

If they started the first time without issues, there would be no reason for you to be talking about it on a forum. ;)

I know of at least two so called reality type TV shows that are 100% scripted and made up. I've had two friends of mine tell me to watch this upcoming episode of a certain show because their car or boat was in it. In one case, the show presented the car as a “barn find” and it was unknown to anyone. Another was a more recent show that supposedly had a high dollar boat repossessed.

In both shows, the stories surrounding the vehicles was completely made up and everyone involved was acting out the script. Both of the real owners were paid for the use of their vehicles in the shows. It looked somewhat realistic on TV, but there wasn’t a shred of truth to any of it.

There are some shows that are not faked to that extent such as Overhaulin, but even that type of show has events that need to be scripted or events happen so that it makes for good TV and will keep people coming back for more.

I personally enjoy watching Top Gear (the UK version). I know that most of it is faked, but I find it very entertaining and that is why I keep watching.

I like watching it just mostly to see cars and people working on cars.  Of course it is mostly scripted and certainly not reality, but its better than watching all the depressing  on the news.

I agree with that 100%. Maybe i should drop in those DIZZYS for them and pre fill the carb bowls so they start on the first crank. Did they not figure this out yet. NOPE!!! Have a great evening guys.

The Fat and Furious show on Discovery is filmed in my hometown. I've gotten to meet the guys that run the shop at a few local car shows; nice guys all around.

That being said…the show is extremely scripted and there isn't much in the way of ad-libbing. For example, back in April I was at a local Corvette show. The film crew from F&F was there filming, but nobody really knew what was going on, just that the footage would be used on TV somehow and no mention of the show whatsoever. Well, in August the show is on TV and the way it was edited, it showed things being one way…but I was there! It wasn't that way at all! Guess the "real" car show didn't make for good TV drama, so it had to get a scripted plot line in somewhere. It really does all come down to editing.

So I take it all at face value and don't put too much into it. I know those guys know what they're doing because they've built cars for people I know for many years. They're good builders. But ratings are your lifeblood when you're on TV, and you're at the mercy of the producers and network. They want you to be corny, you have to be corny. They want drama, you inject drama. And so it goes...

(BTW, I was very briefly shown on that Corvette episode. I knew it was me because I was the only one wearing shorts that day LOL. And every episode of F&F featured either someone I directly knew, or knew about, so that is really cool to experience).

Ok so it is staged. But having a car out of time can bust off starter drives ETC. But when it happens on the show it seems like they are all flustered to whats wrong. Staged maybe ? Or maybe NOT?? Still makes me laugh all the time. have a great day guys.
