Had the same bolt shear off my 88 XR7.  I was also using a 6pt socket after soaking overnight with WD40.  In the end it sheared off at the bell housing.  Used an easy-out but that also broke.  Eventually had to take it to a local shop who then had to remove the header and down pipe to gain access.  They drilled out the broken stud and replaced with a larger nut/bolt.

Good luck brother.

File the sides of the bolt down until you have all 6 sides flat again. find the closest undersized socket and beat it on square with a hammer until it is completely flush.

if that doesn't work, chisel the head of the.bolt of, remove starter and pray you can get vise grips to it.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

These are some good ideas

When I first read the first post I thought of these

Here is what i would try. If the bolt has some meat left on it at the base get a good 6 point socket like a snap on and grind the relief off the face of the socket smooth. If it is 13MM use a 1/2 inch instead that normally will give you more bite. And do not use an old socket. Snap on sockets are FLANK DRIVE.  Then get a punch and hammer and beat it in towards the tranny a couple of times  then get out the smoke wrench and heat the bolt along with the bell-housing area. Do this with caution not to melt the bell-housing then try and twist the bolt out. Those bolts get corroded in the bell-housing. If you have room use a dremmel to square off the bad edges and try a smaller socket. Or use the dremmel and try cutting off the bolt head till the starter comes out then remove the stud that is left. Or burn the head of the bolt off with a torch.  But it sounds like the bolt is corroded in the bell-housing like i said. Or you could  weld a nut on top of the messed up bolt and then use a socket to twist it out. I have had very good luck welding a nut to the top of stripped bolt and getting them out. The heat from welding also loosens the threads in the bell-housing and they usually come out. Good Luck. Hope you have room to work down there. If memory serves me it is tight. Have a great Monday guys

Bellow is a plug that a customer stripped in a 5 SPEEDER and i got out by welding a bolt on to it. Always use the proper tool to remove these plugs. Not the end of a ratchet. By the way he drained the Tranny first and the stuck plug was the fill. never do it in that sequence. Always remove the fill plug FIRST!!!!! I never reuse those plugs. I use BRASS hex type pipe plugs and use 6 point wrenches to install them. And never over tighten them. You can crack the tranny case rather easily.

Thank everyone for the help.I used a chisel. It broke the starter casing just under the bolt.Stoping to eat. Then I'll raise the motor and drop the starter. I also removed the coil spring because it was broken into 3 pc. And I will be installing new struts and stablilize pins. Thanks again Guys.

craftsman gator grip sockets I believe are what they are called.  they come in small sets of 3 or 4 and these cover all standard or metric heads.

sockets that have a spiral interior sharpened edge such that when you rotate the socket counter clock wise it bits into the hardware.
the spiral interior is also cone or tapered slightly inward ,,,, nothing stands a chance of fighting you when you use these.

a bit late but yes that's a tool you should buy today
