The turbo itself is cooled by antifreeze and lubricated by oil.  Can you hear the "whistle" when you speed up?  Is performance down?  If performance is definitely down, you may have a turbo problem.

The gauge is just a vacuum-type gauge with a small hose attached to the back of it in the gauge cluster. If the turbo still works (car still accelerates fine), but the gauge doesn't move, then the hose may either be cracked or popped off.

Oh, and the turbo won't build pressure when you are parked, so the gauge may not move unless you drive the car.  If you can't move the car and need to check the turbo, pull the inlet hose off the turbo and see if the turbo wheel/blades turns freely.  Also, check for play (wobble).  But speeding the engine while parked won't show if the turbo works or not, because it won't build pressure unless it is "under load".

Check the turbo with the inlet hose off (bottom hose going from VAM to turbo) when engine is off... :)
