T-5 out of a 95 mustang

So i have a 85 thunderbird with a 302 in it that has a aod. I have a chance to get a t-5 out of a 95 mustang.
Will the 95 t-5 work with my thunderbird if i go to a carb?

Yes, i am running a 03 sn-95 t-5 out of a v-6 mustang. you need either a 94-95 gt bell housing or a 94-04 3.8 bell housing. the later v-6 bell housings you can reuse your aod bellhousing bolts.

the sn-95's use a mini starter. the 94-98 trannys will work with your stock vss. The newer 99-04's use a oss.

the v-6 uses a larger clutch and flywheel. i used one for a 87 f-150 behind my 5.0. The 94-95 gt uses a regular 10.5" clutch and standard 157tooth flywheel.

good luck.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

No idea what it will actually hold up to, but I've got 50k miles of smoking 1st gear starts and been through 3 sets of motor mounts without issue. i might have burned up the f-150 clutch a bit. it won't hold against the mighty one wheel peel of the 275/60's out back anymore.

my tbird is down till i can pull the motor to replace the oil pan, power steering rack, ac lines and obviously the motor mounts from driving it with bad mounts. i plan to get some chuckw's mounts after a few paychecks.

if i wanted the strongest, cheapest t-5 i could, id go with an aftermarket 164 tooth flywheel with appropreate clutch, a 99+ t-5 and swap a 83-98 tail shaft housing on it to be able to use a stock speedo gear/vss input. you will have to clearance 5th gear slightly. when i get around to it on my car i plan to do a write up on it.

the 94-98 trans had a 3.35 1st gear and .73 od ratio and were rated for 265lbs.
the 99-04 were rated at either 300-315lbs depending on who you ask, but they had the same 1st gear and a more stock like .68 od ration for 5th. they also got many of the gt transmission upgrades.

one thing you'll notice is all the charts stop about 94-95 after tremec bought them out.

One thing i forgot to mention, shifter sits back about 3/8-1/2", which still worked fine for me. i swapped on a super coupe shifter handle to do away eith the crazy offset of the stock handle. my 6'5" gorilla frame can easily reach with the shorter handle, although i haven't driven it like that yet. also, the clutch cable and arm sit at the 7 o'clock position rather then the. 9 o'clock spot of the gt's. it cleared my stock y-pipe fine, but some say it gets in the way of an h-pipe. i will be testing this out as well soon.

Personally, I'd like for the shifter in my Bird to be further back..

Might have to look into an SN95 length T5.

With chuck motor mounts and the proper trans mount, it would likely be fine. it was close to hitting 2nd into the ashtray. That's part of the reason i didn't put a shifter boot on it. a straight stick or one that only leans back would be perfect.

i honestly do not beleive my trans is going to let go anytime soon. guy i bought it off of said it had 190k miles, and u put another 50k on it at least. i honestly love it more then anything I've ever done to a car.

Its funny that you said your mount is bad i just ripped my passenger side mount and the engine hops now one of the meny resons its getting parked
I am trying to find a t-5 but there either way to expensive or gone before i get to them
And my local wrecking yard just closed there doors so i have to find a new one :( loved that yard
My car is the automatic on the column and i do not think theres a hole in the floor for the shifter so i think im going to have to cut it out.
Any advice on the swap what find of headachs did you come across with yours?

here is my complete swap thread, most everything is in here you might need to know, any questions and ill be happy to answer.

i had a 2" hole saw and just drilled it in the.center console hole. the car was a consolette. i added it before the swap.

when i purchased the t-5, i figured i was going to end up swapping input shafts. i had no idea if i could actually use it.

my recommendations, pulling the aod and pedal swap was the hardest part. now i would fill t the t-5 before mounting and have the hole already cut open. I just taped some cardboard over the shifter area, mounted it then added the atf and then mounted the shifter. the shifter requires a fairly large hole if you want to take it off and swap it from inside the car.

now i would just pull the lower shift boot seal, line it up inside the console and mark it with a sharpie on the carpet and cut the carpet only around the lower shifter seal, and then only trim the metal enough to not interfere with any of the shifter movement.

if i had to do it again, i figure i could have it done start to finish in less then 12 hours if i had all the parts. there was a lot of research and mock up and just plain not knowing if it would work killing my modivation.

i highly recommend it. i also never actually installed a block dust plate. get one from your donor trans. my trans was sourced off craiglist for $150.
