Exhaust upgrade .

Gutting my rusted out dual y pipe exhaust system.  I am considering buying a Mac Xpipe complete exhuast that was on an 88 5.0l mustang . It is priced dirt cheap .
I have an 88 5.0l model with column shift and AOD . I have tranny crossmember in place and have bought stock 5.0l stang headers
I have done search here  and read up on subject . Any possiblity this set up would work ? clearance probs ? Anyone have the same set up ?

With the shorty headers, it should work fine. You MAY need to adjust your shifter linkage at the frame to clear the H or X pipe. After that, you'll need the rest of the exhaust. Our cars, although being a Fox, are longer in the middle and at the rear than a Stang, so some lengthening and tweaking will be involved. Nothing too serious that a ler shop can't do, or yourself if you have what you need to do exhaust work.

I have the complete exhaust vinnie . Looks like I cut tails with sawzall and get a ler shop to add 1ft of pipe to fit. just sizing up the down pipes right now . tight against shift linkage and tight against the starter on passenger side . i will try fitting better as it gets warmer . -19c right now and my garage is not insulated . ;)

I ended up removing the stud on the header closest to the shift linkage and using a nut and bolt to hold the pipe. It has worked great for years.

How did you guys handle the smog pump connection?  My Y pipe looks like there is a tube in only one of the 'pre-cats'.

Also, was it necessary to extend your O2 sensor wires?  If so,  is there a cheap extender pre-made, or get out the soldering iron?

Thanks.

On mine, the X-pipe I used had no cats, which renders the smog pump useless. The smog pump by-pass pulley I purchased did not fit, so I gutted the pump. None of this can be done where you live. I assume you are replacing the Y-pipe with a H  or X pipe? If it comes with the cats, the smog pump would still not be needed due to the advancement of today's cat converters. What I do not know, does California look for the smog pump, or do they just use the "sniffer"? My exhaust did not turn out so well, and will be replaced with a custom exhaust job. My O2 sensor wires did reach. However, one of the sensors is pointing in a downward position. Not a good situation. I have not seen anything for O2 extenders. If you must lengthen them yourself, I must say, please use some heat shrink with that solder!

Many members here have used aftermarket headers with some modification. Stock Mustang headers will work great with no modification. Great choice, because, who wants to possibly destroy expensive headers. Shift linkage clearance will be an issue. With some creativity, that can be resolved. Everybody says that Mustang exhaust systems work great other than the fact that they are a little short. I did not have this problem with the Summit brand. Perhaps my X-pipe caused the extra length. My X-pipe is of unknown brand. I got it with a Mustang parts car, and had never been installed. This is one of the best upgrades that can be done other than heads. Good luck!

It's far easier to just buy a set of O2s for a Mustang, as they have longer pigtails on them.  Patching the stock O2s to be longer can mess them up, as people who do that tend to tape the extension up tight.  The sensor has to breathe in outside air for reference, which means the wiring must not be sealed up.  Downward is preferable to upward, if they're upward, water and oil can settle into the reference chamber in the sensor and screw up the reading the PCM gets from them.
Watch for the rod hanger by the X to be too long and require shortening, nobody want's their shiznit to se.  And remember, you'll be lengthening the mid-pipes as well as the tails.

Here in CA, they definitely look for any 'tampering' of the original smog equipment as well as the sniff test.  Which of course is ridiculous if you're within emissions standards out the tail pipe.  Fortunately I live in one of the few rural areas where smog checks are not required except when you sell or buy (for however long that lasts).  I probably want to keep the smog pump installed but if there is some way to turn it off to the heads and the cat (or maybe just let it blow into nothing?).    Hey, a thought,  can it be redirected to my intake?

I bought a catless x-pipe that was on a mustang with welded on flowmasters and dumps.  It has bungs for the O2 sensors.  I also have BBK shorties.  From the postings so far, I'm a bit nervous to try to do this myself since you guys have had fitment problems.  Custom jobs are kind of expensive but I will need someone to put my tail pipes on it anyway.  I have no idea how these lers are going to sound -- I don't really want a noisy system, esp. in CA.

Tail pipes are really easy to install. I got a quote for a cat back on my 86 (stock of course)cougar and they hit me with $650.

I went to autozone and ordered a stock tail mid-pipe and ler for $75. Had it hung under the car in about an hour and saved near $500. You ought to be able to do the same with a small extension between the ler and mid pipe. only real hurdle is exhaust hangar on passenger side, but that's easy to work around.

If you have any exhaust leaks after, my master ler will weld it up for $20 a weld. Would still be way cheaper then having a shop do all the work if they did every connection welded. just pull it in and tell them you have a small exhaust leak. they don't generally mind welding brand new parts.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.
