Fixed water leak(gremlin) still not sure of engine.

Hi; i finally found where my water was going, it was using like 1/2 gallon every 2 days.. it was the timing cover to block seeping when driving on freeway (only). when i was in there i decided to go ahead and replace timing chain. i discovered the chain that was in there was a double roller, with a ford part# i did some research and found it came on the h/o motors? i know car has had some work done or motor replaced becuase of chain and also it had a rubber pan gasket with stops. also when i bought the car oil and temp guages didnt work, the sensors where for a non guage car...so i still dont know what engine i have..im installing a gt40 intake next weekend and will run block #s also check head casting #s hope fully then i can get timing and idle correct, now if i set timing correctly it pings and i cant get idle to specs either high or low from specs..

It's always nice to find good surprises when you open up the engine. One piece at a time. With the timing cover being pulled, it's a great time to do the H.O upgrade....cam, computer, injectors, exhaust and intake. Done.

Not unusual to find a '88 SO engine with the double roller, seen em before... Not sure when but seems to have been a change fairly early in the model year...

my sons bird had it as well.

have you all noticed the provision for the mechanical fuel pump still included in the cams on our cars?

the 3.8's even had a offset bell end to actuate the mech fuel pump but the timing cover is full of aluminum molding.
the 5.0 didnt have the blocked off mech pump molded in though,, but the cam on the end has like a 90deg L thing that swings around to move the pump handle.
