broken motor mount bolts

so.... interestingly enough I knew I had a bad motor mount. today it got worse. I had planned on doing.both mounts this weekend. so I bought a new mount, went and jacked the car up. then whole top had of the mount is just gone. one bolt sheared off. the other is still there with a piece of the mount still attached.

anyone else ever have this problem? any ideas other then drilling the bolt out and trying a bolt extractor?

Mine were like that on the Sport when I got it. On the driver side.

Have a welder? When they're flush like that, sometimes you can weld a nut onto it (welding inside the nut to allow it to attach to the broken piece) and get it out that way.

It's also possible that it will easily spin out.  As long as it's not corroded in there there's no tension on the threads now, so really there's not much holding it in place.

I thought about that chuck. I do have a welder but never used it. my dad has done a bit, probably enough to do it.

btw,.gonna have any of your type 6 mounts here in about two weeks?  never in a million years did I think a s.o. motor would rip the bracket off. think I need something a hit beffier now. I figure the bolt that did break must have been loose. other wise I couldn't see it shearing clean off like that.

The bolt probably broke after the other side of the bracket had broken (or vise-versa).

It can be a little difficult to get the welder where you need it and to try and mate the broken stud to the nut, but I've done it a couple times on smaller bolts, even ones that were corroded in place, with decent results. The heat from the welding also helps with unsticking things if it's corroded in there. I'm guessing though that it may come out easier than you think, and you may not need to resort to the welder.

I have a couple sets of mounts sitting on the shelf if you need a set.

For what it is worth here is my take on this.

If the bolt is not bottomed out and snapped off for what ever. It most likely will come out with either a left hand drill or sometimes a pick to rotate it out if you get lucky. I am willing to bet a bolt fell out of the mount and put stress on the remaining bolt and it snapped. So try a pick and see if it will come out. If not then drill it you may get lucky. I just did a post on busted bolts. Welding a nut to the remaining stud is always a good alternative for 2 reasons. It heats the bolt as chuck points out and it wont stick to the cast iron only the bolt. I have only dun this 2-3 times and it worked quite nicely. Busted bolts suck. But if it is not bottomed out it should come out. If it is bottomed out you are screwed and have to drill it and coil the sucker. Good Luck

LEFT HAND DRILL. THEY WORK  if the bolt is not bottomed out !!! This tranny is aluminum and it came out quite nicely. I was surprised with this one. Now for the EXPLORER EXHAUST MANIFOLD!!!!

NOTE you will need a MIG to weld a nut on to the busted bolt.

These bolts use a locking thread. They require a little extra torque to remove even if there is no corrosion. I'd go with the welding method.

The left side mount on the '87 Sport I used for parts was busted, had a buddy weld it up and with approx 700 drag strip passes it's been fine...

Interestingly when I pulled the 5.0, it has a broken bolt on the passenger side but mount is fine... I plan on going to good grade eight bolts using Chuck's mounts when the 331 goes in...

I am really surprised that it did rip apart the mount. got the kids for another couple hours. gonna see if I can get that other bolt out after they go.
