Attn Newer Ford Owners June 17, 2005, 09:25:57 AM A sobering story...http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/06/16/ford.vehicles/index.htmlIf you have a mid-1990's Ford like the ones listed in the article, consider disconnecting the cruise control harness by the master cylinder to prevent this from happening to you. Ford is supposedly working on a fix for this. In the meantime, the only real solution is to disconnect the harness and therefore lose the cruise control functionality. But at least it won't burn to the ground.Note that Mark VIII owners are affected as well. Quote Selected
Re: Attn Newer Ford Owners Reply #1 – June 17, 2005, 09:35:26 AM Thanks for the heads up Eric. This story made the news here last night. My 99 ranger doesn't have cruise so I guess that's safe. The 02 Mustang is not on the list so i guess that's safe also. Is there anywhere i can get this confirmed? Quote Selected
Re: Attn Newer Ford Owners Reply #2 – June 17, 2005, 10:01:44 AM has there ever been such a huge recall?sounds like its time for a cruise relay to be put inline with the ign switch so its only hot when koer mode. contacts for the cruise should be normally open. Quote Selected
Re: Attn Newer Ford Owners Reply #3 – June 17, 2005, 10:29:21 AM Another big black eye for Ford.. lovely. And to think, I was thinking about picking up a newer-but-still-used econo-box Ford if I get the job I'm after. Quote Selected

Re: Attn Newer Ford Owners Reply #5 – June 17, 2005, 11:07:58 AM Quotehas there ever been such a huge recall?I'd bet the ignition switch recall was bigger - it included almost all Fords from '88 to '94 (and really should have included many more, since pre-88 used the same switch). I had one burn and three fail (without fire). This problem, while pretty serious, is not as big as the media is making it out to be. I just looked at Mitchell OnDemand and saw that some vehicles only have power at that switch in the "run" position (Explorer, for example) while some have power at all times (Expedition). Obviously the ones that only have power in "run" will not burn your house down.Of course there's always the chance that the Explorer could tip over onto your house after a tread separation... Re: Attn Newer Ford Owners Reply #6 – June 17, 2005, 11:23:26 AM The biggest problem is that all F-150's have power at all times. You know...the vehicles that Ford sells close to a million of each model year. That's pretty major. My buddy has known about this problem for at least 6 months and has disconnected it on his '00 Lightning. We took it on a road trip this past April and since he's 6'4" and needs to stretch his legs often, not having cruise control sucked for him. We pulled over, he connected it, we hit the road again, used the cruise control, then when we got to the destination, he disconnected it. Basically he plugs it in only if he needs to use it. Having an inline switch, like jcassity suggested, is a good solution. Problem is, not a lot of people want to start hacking wiring on a fairly new vehicle, especially if there's still part of a warranty period still involved. That's why they're waiting for Ford to come up with something to fix it.Cruise control, hot at all times. Gotta love Ford engineers. Quote Selected
