help me troubleshoot my problem(s) please

tonight im driving around and all that good stuff car works fine and all is well. then i run into a few buddies stop and chat. and i turn the car off. so i go to leave . and the car wont start. so im thinking whats going on. all the lights come on just wont crank and start. so i move the shifter out of park and back in. nothing. then i repeated and put the thing in park with more force. i figured the shifter fould up. but it worked and started the car. but the car was stuck in first gear. so now i really dont know what happened. and i drove in 1st to my buddies house around the corner. and shut the car off. then it wouldnt and still wont start without jumping the starter. and when it's started it wount catch a gear, none it was stuck in 1st now nothing just like park or neutral. even if i remove the linkage for the shifter. and try catching a gear manualy. and the reverse lights wont come on now either.

so what i think is wrong is (A) that the no start problem is either the ignition switch is bad. bc i was having a problem with acc a few days ago and now it worked fine untill this.

(b) the neutral safty switch is bad on the trans.
C) the govenor is bad on the trans not letting it out of 1st.

p.s. if it matters the rear break was kinda funky b4 all this happend it kinda sqweeld coming to a stop.
(1993 lx 5.0 auto ) hope someone can help. it's my daily driver and i got to walk to work now. thanks Erik ,

Check the ground from the battery terminal to the body. I had the same problem with my 87 XR7. It would start fine when it was cold, but would crank really slow or not at all when it was warm. Finally, the ground wire just burst into flame. I replaced it with heavier wire and never had any problems again. I think the original was 10 gauge wire, which was probably fine when the car was new. Over time the wire just lost it's ability to pass current, which was amplified by the heat in the engine bay. Give it a try, maybe you'll get lucky.

that sounds tricky as all get out.

check your bushings on all you linkages,, primarily the triangle bracket down near the driver precat.  Next id look at the tv cable.  Im confussed on the part where you manually did the the gears, car would have to be running in order to get a result and the key would have to be in the run pos., sounds dangerous.

mine did that when the shift linkages got stuck in the emergency brake. When I put the emergency brake on it snapped and all was good with the tranny. Dont think you will be so lucky though. Good luck.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

It really sounds like some sort of linkage problem to me. When I totaled my 88 couagar the linkage it wouldn't start in park I had to wiggle the shifter to get to move. I don't believe that a tranny that was just working fine would all of a sudden  out while the car is shut off.

solved it. the arm that conects to the manual valve on the trans came undone and caused all this mess. so 4 days out (still counting) and 10 hours today and the car still isnt off jack stands  the vb had to come off so that was a big ass mess. got it all back together and the stupid rubber gaskit they gave us with the filter was all funky causeing us problem. now one bolt isnt tight in the pan and it started leaking bf anything. so i got to tefflon tape that up to make it grab. but i tested out to see if the car would start and sure enough rite up it started. the car isnt road worthy yet bc of the misc. peices still needing to be put back on and ready tro drive so i hope it catches a gear. and works. i'll fart around with it after work tomorrow.  thanks for the help guys. just keeping ya up to date

I had that happen to a freind once.  tranny just wouldn't work and it was the linkage inside the tranny.
