Car lift November 14, 2012, 11:25:58 AM I'm looking at buying a lift with my tax return. I've never had the pleasure of using one before, so I don't know if working from a stool will be adequate. The problem is that I have a fairly wide two car carport so if I buy a lift that is stationary, I will have to watch the height. Safety is my first concern, so that would probably mean a four post lift? My budget is going to be around $3000 or less. I have a long cement drive, so the perfect lift would be if they made a portable four post lift that I could use it either in the carport (working from a stool) or in the driveway (standing up). I would rather buy a good quality short stationary than a tall lift that is cheaply made. I have no idea which brands to look for and or options to get with it. Thanks in advance for your assistance! Car lift Reply #1 – November 14, 2012, 08:29:43 PM Portable and four post are two incompatible terms in relation to lifts! Two post lifts are in most all service bays these days (and not because their portable!). Check out http://www.garagejournal.com and view their forums. Lots of reviews there on what you're looking for.The ceiling in my garage is 8' and it is only 20' wide (a narrow two car). I found a used Rotary low rise lift which fits my needs. It puts the car up 24"-28". Has full access to the transmission and good access to the exhaust. It gets high enough to use a creeper under the car and a roll around stool works great for brake/wheel/suspension and cleaning the lower section of the cars. It is considered portable, but I've got it bolted into the floor. Good luck with your research, it's a good portion of the fun. Quote Selected
Car lift Reply #2 – November 14, 2012, 08:53:14 PM They made portable 2 post lifts that have wheels on them to drag them to the giant bolt holes in the ground that you have to put in to support the pillar. Quote Selected
Car lift Reply #3 – November 14, 2012, 09:37:02 PM The more I looked at the lifts, the more it looks like you can actually do more with a two pillar lift. On some lifts you can't seem to be able to work on the wheels, brakes, ect.. Rotary? I need to check that out! Every now and then there is a lift on Craig's list, last time I saw a brand new one for sell. The portable two post doesn't sound too bad. That's what eight bolts to move it? With a portable drill that's not bad. I checked out the "garage journal", that's a nice forum! Problem is now I want a John Neeman axe (see video). Thanks! Quote Selected
