2.3 info

My nephew is purchasing a Mustang with a 2.3 that has had a turbo added to it. Bottom end is chewed up due to overboost. He is also purchasing a TC Bird that the top end has some sort of damage, but the bottom end is fine. He wants to put the two together and put it in the Mustang. We will split the cost on the TC so I can take the parts I need from it for my Bird. He is wondering what years the internal parts of the 2.3 are interchangeable. And I wish to know if there are differences in turbo and non-turbo.

turbo pistons are dished forged, N/A are cast ( not boost friendly), turbo heads have a larger open chamber than n/a heads as well as better exhaust valves, turbo blocks already have the coolant and oil returns. i would check over all your parts carefully you intend to re use, running high boost without supporting mods can cause alot of problems especially if its a n/a engine. I'm curious as to what ecm

pistons in the turbo motor are forged vs. cast in the n/a motor heads are different but you can run a n/a head with a turbo. turbo blocks have oil and coolant returns, I would carefully check any parts you intend to re use running high boost without supporting mods can really trash an engine quick. curious as to what other parts are on this car if it was a n/a mustang they would have had to upgrade a few things if done correctly. also what turbo is on the car? IHI or T3. most parts are interchangable but you really only want the turbo internals not the n/a. check out turboford.org you will find anything you want to know there.

Heads are probably different. The turbo has D-port, lower compression than the N/A head. You won't know what you have until you look at them. There are early N/A heads with lower compression. I have one, but don't recall the casting number or application.

If you use the N/A head, keep the timing back, run 93 octane, and keep the boost down!
