Timing?

I put a new distributor in my Cougar but I guessing it's a tooth off. I just tried starting the car and it starts right up, but runs rough, sounds rough, so I killed it. I just pulled the #1 spark plug and it's black (brand new plugs). Am I on the right track? Thanks!

What engine is this? Was it running right before you swapped in the new distributor? Did you make sure that the rotor was pointing the same way again with the new distributor, as when you took out the old one? It's best to always turn the motor over to exact TDC before you swap in another Dizzy. That way you know the rotor needs to be pointing directly at the #1 terminal on the cap. A intermittent TFI or PIP can also make it run shiznitty.

"86" Cougar w/5.0 engine. I've been working on my car for a couple months now. I replaced the distributor about a month ago. But then, I replaced the oil pan and I took the oil pump and pick up tube out, so I'm sure I messed up the timing. It might be a lot more that a tooth off. When I tried starting it up, it sounded like my bike did when I had the rotor off 180 degrees. I sounded like it was under water. I can't think of anything else that would turn my plugs black so fast or sound like it did. Thanks!

Well, I worked on the timing today. Yes, it had moved when I took the oil pump out. I took my time and tried to get the TDC mark on my harmonic balancer as close as I could to the mark. I also went to my trunk and reset the fuel pump reset switch just for kicks. When I was convinced that my timing was close, I tried starting up my car. It started right up and ran better than before but as it idled it got rougher and rougher. I ran to check out the timing and I got it to where it would stay running. When I revved up the engine it sounded strong, but when I let it idle it started to stumble again. That is when I noticed water dripping out of my mass air meter. I then looked over at my exhaust and it was smoking so I shut it off. I feel pretty sure that water is getting into my intake. I will make a new gasket and see if it will hold me over until I get another one.

Probably should have put this in "Electrical". Hopefully, my car will e running by the time I figure out what I'm doing here. Sorry!
