Fuel reading on full digi cluster compared to AVG Econ. September 10, 2012, 02:29:07 PM I just drove up to Ohio for some TMobile work here in Kent and noticed something on my 20th digital cluster.Fuel tank said i am now at 12 gallonsAVG ECON said i am at 22.3 miles per gallon (I reset the econ when i hit level land in Marrietta oh).Total miles driven was 280 when i notice this issueMy fuel meter says F when i fill it When it leaves "F", it falls to 21 gallons so that means its approx 22gal tank.so back to my point,, my tank said 12 gal and i had driven 280miles yet my avg econ was saying something that did not add up.If i go 280miles on 10 gallons used, thats 28miles to the gallon highway. This is just an observation, my Real gas consumption is not actually displaying even after i reset the avg econ when i hit level ground.Ill be all over the NE portion of ohio for the next 3 weeks or so. Fuel reading on full digi cluster compared to AVG Econ. Reply #2 – September 10, 2012, 03:55:07 PM Had you reset your average at fillup, you'd likely be closer to an accurate display. That's what i do with mine. I then do the math at each fill and the digital cluster has always been within 0.5 mpg of the actual. Some guys won't consider that to be accurate, but it's close enough for me. Quote Selected
Fuel reading on full digi cluster compared to AVG Econ. Reply #3 – September 10, 2012, 03:59:59 PM Yeah, and thanks for letting me know that you're in my 'hood. The bars on the digital display are arbitrary and don't represent any actual amounts. So don't ever go by those for anything LOL.The fuel computer is basing on averages the computer sees, but is not really super accurate either. I don't even trust them in newer cars...it's been more often on the incorrect side in both my folks' 2010 Fusion and Woman's 2009 Milan. The only way to figure real, true fuel economy is to fill the tank, drive a distance, fill up again, and divide the mileage travelled by the number of gallons you just put in. Easy peasy. That being said...28mpg is likely correct, even in mixed driving. In the past I've achieved anywhere from 28-32 on the highway with the 5.0L V8 and 2.73 gears (i.e. not the convertible). Hell, I've even achieved 21-22mpg on the highway in the Mountaineer 5.0. City is more like 12-14, but yeah, highway is a noticeable improvement. The 5.0 likes the highway, that is for certain. Keep it steady on open roads and it will reward you nicely. Quote Selected

Fuel reading on full digi cluster compared to AVG Econ. Reply #7 – September 12, 2012, 11:32:51 PM Mine is off due to the calibrated MAF and 24lb injectors, as the computer thinks it's firing 19lb injectors. I'm not sure by how much, as I never tried to figure it out. The car is not a daily driver so I'm not very concerned about gar mileage. I do know my highway mileage is around 21 mpg with 3.73 gears and a non lock up torque converter. What's really amazing is the 2012 Mustang V6 we have. It has 305hp but gets 30 mpg at 70 mph. It's probably due to the 6 speed auto. Quote Selected

Fuel reading on full digi cluster compared to AVG Econ. Reply #9 – September 14, 2012, 09:09:29 PM Idleing kills mileage on the digi dash. Even just having the key on does. Also if you cycle your key on and off a few times, it drops about .2mpg every time. When I worked at domino's doing a lot of quick trips, my gauge would read 16mpg and I sometimes got as high as 19mpg, only city, calculating with filling up gas and dividing the numbers. On a straight freeway trip, slowing down to 55mph or so can get you into the 35mpg range, average of 26-32 or so wish mixed 65-75 was my average. Sometimes as low as 25-28mph though. Using cruise is less efficient if your on flat roads.I've found straight freeway treip, the computer is usually about 1 mpg off of what I calculate at the pump. Sometimes higher or lower.
