A/C Compressor

Looking for an A/C Compressor for my 87 T-Bird 3.8 V-6 TBI. I know there are a few different versions depending upon engine or year. Mine is the small short black one. I live here in the NYC area. If not I'm thinking of going to have the old origional one rebuilt.

If you've got the small balck short one you've got an HR980 compressor. This is the same compressor used on the T/c's. You should be able to get a remaned unit. Make sure you ask for the one from a 3.8 model bird as they tell you they don't reman the T/C ones. Witch is a load of shiznit becuase they are the same one the pully is different.

Yup it's the HR 980. I found a shop near me who can have the old one rebuilt for a reasonable price, around $150. I called a couple of Ford dealers near me just to check. One said that it was discontinued. the other had it for over $400. Word to the wise they also make an upgrade kit that consists of the newer style compressor that runs off of the serpertine belt along with the hoses and filter dryer kit. I didn't want to go for this set up since I already replaced the hoses, filter dryer and o-rings a couple of years back.

Let us know if they can rebuild it... Everything I've heard about those says they can't be rebuilt. Sold one from a TC last year to a guy for a V6, said he could not find a replacement.

To clear things up they do reman the HR980 compressors they are just a little hard to find. I work at a parts store and I can only find them listed for the 85,86,87 3.8 motor cougar or Tbird. The only difference that I know of is that the 3.8 has a single pully and the T/c ones have the double v-blet pully. I'll get a number off of it today if I can remeber.

Cool...

FYI the '87-'88 TCs use a 6 rib, serpentine pulley. Maybe the dual V belt and serpentine belt clutches are no longer available for the HR980, and that is why it's not listed???

Actually I looked again today and I found that the only t-bird/cougars that they list a compresspr for is the other style and the 85-86 Hr980 with the single v-belt pully. I didn't check for the newer years. I did find that the Murry part number for the single v-belt pully Hr980 compressor is 65401. I also found that they do list the dual v-belt pully with clutch but they don't list a compressor. Any how they also have a replacment for the HR980 compressor but I don't think that it would work on the T/c  because it is the long style compressor.

Sorry for the bad info but the part number I listed 65401 isn't a compressor it is a conversion kit for the long style compressor. I ordered it into work just to make sure. The book gave that number as a compressor. Sorry about that guys & gals

Picked a good one up the other day at my local auto wrecker for a meer $50. Apparently these compressors Hr980 have a sorid history and many rebuilders don't want to deal with them, thats why they sell the retrofit kit. Up here in NYC your luckier to get a good compressor since the A/C is used less frequently. Anyway A/C is back up and running.
