New Engine Ideas?

I just sold my 96 Maxima for $3000. So I was thinking about buying a new motor for the Thunderbird. Nothing wrong with my supercharged 5.0 SO, but I'd like a little more power. I was thinking about this:http://www.jegs.com/i/Ford+Racing/397/M-6007-X302/10002/-1
I'd like to keep it under $4000 and I will most likely be running a turbo on whatever I get.
Any suggestions?

Some things to consider about this engine:  1. The technology of the cam and heads is pretty aged and wasn't cutting edge 20 years ago.  2. Stock block and supercharger.

~$4k can get you some great parts.

I've just been looking at crate motors in jegs and summit. Are you suggesting building a custom motor? Or is there a better site to order a crate package from?

There are a lot of vendors who offer long block assemblies and most offer some level of customization.

With a new engine, a 3" stroke costs about the same as a 3.4":  Each needs rods, pistons and crank.

The power difference between an $1,100 set of heads and a $1,500 set of heads can be huge.  A custom cam that can really make the combination work from idle to redline, is about another $100.

Commiting $4k is a chunk of change for a relatively mild engine replacement.

If your future plans are to remain supercharged, a stock block's ability to cope is underwelming.  Turbocharged they can hold a little more, as the crank isn't getting yanked to the side.  Search Corral.net for info on broken blocks to clarify what happens and why.

Figure out what you really want.  Maybe the Motorsport long block meets all your needs, if it does, that's great!

There are lots of options and there is a ton of information out there on SBF builds.  Knowing what your needs are and taking the time to research what available will help ensure you'll feel like you received value for the money spent.

As you sort through all the stuff on the net, keep in mind the axom: Cheap, Fast, Reliable; You only get to pick two.

Good luck with your build!

I should mention that my hp goal is to be around 500, mainly because my trans is only rated for 550. I guess buying a crat from a catalog is probably not the best choice. I'm going to speak to an engine builder and see how much it will be to have my engine built to suit my needs.
