Radio Needed for 85 T-Bird

I need a radio for an 85 T-Bird, I need it to be able to mount right up, and plug in. I would prefer to not have to put aftermarket in, and I don't think I have the metal bracket that is supposed to slide in with the radio I can't seem to find it. Not interested in anything special just a radio am/fm. Thanks

I have a factory radio from an 86 T-Bird. It is an AM/FM cassette. I will post a picture this evening for you. I will have to check to see if I have the bracket though.

An 86 radio won't be a direct plug in.  The plugs are different between 85 and 86.  You can put an 86+ radio in an 85 (I have one in my 85) but you will have to rewire it.

Well, I must apologize as I thought I still had the radio out of my 86 T-Bird, but I no longer have it. Sorry to get your hopes up. Thanks for clarifying the difference between 85 and 86 radio wiring Loaded87IROC. I didn't know there was a difference. You might want to browse through the "For Sale" section 85TBird. I thought someone else had some radios for sale.

Thanks guys, this is a really helpful forum, I may wind up just keeping my car instead of selling it.

What does the face of your radio look like? does it have a small display in the left corner 4 presets and I think say Electronic down in the lower rt corner possibly? If so I might still have an extra here.

No, it has twist s for tuning and volume, there is no presets at all, cassette am/fm is all. It started screaming at me when I would adjust the volume so I took it out. It's almost like a bad ground in it or something.

Question is can I install an aftermarket CD player WITHOUT that metal bracket that bolts to the old radio and slides in, or can I just buy a single din Dash kit for the car and install it "firmly" that way?

I usually use the stock side mount brackets and adjust them so it matches up to the face. In my opinion, the dash kit pushes the stereo out too far. Generally you can get at least one bolt into each side where everything lines up, then i f I can't get a second bolt or screw in it, I have just wraped the whole case with black tape until it is semi firm.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

The aftermaket radio wouldn't have a provision for bolting the bracket on, so I would think you would have to go without it.

Been a while since I have done a radio, but I have always been able to get at least one bolt in the stock bracket and have it line up okay.

I think he is talking about the support bracket that bolts onto the radio at the back then goes underneath it.
