Gas tank not filling maybe..spitting back out at the pump

So as usual ripping my hair with this car :hick:..I often wonder if for my sanity I should I put this thing away for a few months and forget about it.

Im not sure if its a coincidence or what but I installed a gillis valve and replaced the rigged up boost controller on my 88 Turbo Coupe last week. I've been battling a non working gas gauge for a lil while now but havent dropped the tank yet to OHM out the wires. When installing my electric coolant temp gauge yesterday I gave my gas tank a few love taps in the sender area just on the off change my arm got stuck. Oddly enough the gauge actually went up a little bit. I ran to the gas station to try to put in 4 or 5 gallons to see if if the needle would actually move. Well just my luck..the pump was stopping at like 6 bucks..I know there isnt 22 gallons of gas in that thing. Any ideas

Are you suuuure it's not full? I think there is only one flap at the bottom of the neck (and the one at the top, obviously, but if you can get the gas nozzle in, that's not the problem). But even if the neck was stuck closed, the neck alone wouldn't hold 6$ worth of gas, I wouldn't think. If you want to see if the bottom flap is closed, maybe stick a length of rubber hose down the filler neck and see how far you can get it in. When you pull it out, see if the end is wet (get your mind out of the gutter).

I am just betting with the gas gauge not working, it's full and you don't know it. Another thing to try is rock the car side to side and listen for the slosh. Loud slosh, more empty, quiet or no slosh, nearly full.

Very good possibility that its full..if that's the case i've underestimated how good this thing is on gas. I tried doing the ole hose trick but couldn't really get a good idea on it. Couldnt really hear anything on the sloosh trick. The only other suggestion was that it might be a blocked breather tube on the top of the tank. Either way no matter what seems like the tank is coming down sometime this week.

So I owe a "you guys were right" lol

Just a update I dropped the tank today. And found a missing fuel gauge sender float, the walbro's sock on the bottom of the tank, and also a bunch of  in the walbro's mini metal screen. I'm guessing either the sock came off during the install process of it somehow worked it's way off while driving. Either way I cleaned out the screen and replaced the sock. Oh yeah I also found the pump connector wires insulation had worn itself thin to point of showing copper. I put a spare float on the senders and heat shrinked the bare wires. And so far I have a working gauge and so far no noisy pump.

Did I mention that the tank was full (22ish gallons I think) it made it challenging but I couldn't be happier to find all the stupid stuff wrong.

I hate a non working gas guage. while i was looking for work, i would fill up a gallon gas can and keep it in the trunk incase i mis calculated mileage. i needed it a few times. my ignition switch was melted and i didn't notice a bad wire to the guages had come out. fixed now.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

If you install a tripminder computer, it will keep track of how many gallons have been used and can be a good backup to a gas gauge.

Glad you got that figured out. If all that gas is being troublesome, I can take some of it off your hands :mullet:

Last time I dropped a tank, I tried to store 5 gallons in one of those water cooler bottles. Something happened to the bottle overnight, and the bottom leaked. It all went down the floor drain. I don't know the gas dissolved it, made it brittle, or what. I was 50% mad and 50% worried about 5 gallons of gas down a drain that I don't know where it goes, heh.
