255lph fuel pump woes...help! February 17, 2011, 11:45:03 PM Hey all, my stock fuel pump died in my '88 Cougar, so I got a 255lph one from Summit. It subsequently died on me when the tank was close to empty a WEEK LATER, and according to my mechanic, it was because the pickup/sock on the new pump isn't in the same location as my stock pump.I am going over there to examine, but has anyone heard of this? And what the proper fix might be?TIA... Quote Selected
255lph fuel pump woes...help! Reply #1 – February 18, 2011, 04:20:40 AM I don't see how the position of the sock could affect it. It is just a filter. Quote Selected

It's just a filter. It was probably a bad pump. Stuff happens, even to new parts. The filter doesn't have a choice but to be in the location it's supposed to be. The pump only fits in the tank one way. Quote Selected

255lph fuel pump woes...help! Reply #5 – February 18, 2011, 12:59:07 PM I've heard that running an EFI pump in a dry tank will kill it but I've never seen it happen. Quote Selected

255lph fuel pump woes...help! Reply #8 – February 19, 2011, 10:17:49 AM Went to my mechanic, yup, its a different sock. If you run it low with a Mustang sock (something I'll never do again) you will kill the pump. And the Tbird sock has a smaller opening that won't fit on a aftermarket Walboro. LincolnsOnline peeps say that a Mark VII sock fits just fine, so I have ordered one. Nick has a good idea there too, I will look into it more when LoL's database stops ping out on me. Quote Selected

255lph fuel pump woes...help! Reply #10 – March 06, 2011, 09:54:23 PM FYI: it took a little while but after seeing what the Mark VII guys do, I put Mark VII sock for my Cougar...and that worked! The socks between the Mark and Tbird/Cougar are the same, except for the diameter of the sock where it attaches to the fuel pump. So when you upgrade your fuel pump, get a Mark VII sock for it too!!! 255lph fuel pump woes...help! Reply #12 – March 07, 2011, 11:28:23 AM Nice, but in case you get a fuel pump from somewhere else for less money (like a guy parting out a Mustang) you don't need to buy a kit, you just spend $12 for the 1988 Lincoln Mark VII sock. Quote Selected
