'85 232 Start / 3 sec run Issue

I need some help here... My bird will start, then idle 3 sec.. then die suddenly.  If I touch the gas it dies even sooner.  TFI? or other suggestions?...  Am away from home and need quick answer as to what to try first.  What does a new TFI cost?  Also, does anybody know the TFI part number?

The new TFI for my 5.0 was around $30 from AutoHole. Are they all pretty much the same?

No idea what to tell ya on the rest. Sorry.

Its possible the tfi is bad and allow fuel to injectors.  For 20 seconds or less, a bad tfi will allow fuel injectors to pulse. after that they will not pulse if the tfi is bad.

with the key off, there should be no voltage at any wires on the TFI connector. Prob with stick pin.
with the key on,, there will be power on the 4th and 5th wire going from top down.

remove the small red wire from starter solenoid on the fender well to prevent starting.
while the key is held to the start position
power is found on the wires 3,4 and 5 counting from top down.
if no power is found at this point,, its a wiring problem.

Update:  Saturday night at g/f's house I discovered car wouldn't start. Sunday I managed to get her to start and stay running so I could leave my g/f's house. got home and it was still behaving; but, I decided to replace the dizzy mounted TFI anyway because if it's done it once...

It turned out being easier than I'd expected, and than the directions made it seem.  The fresh one also seems to have straightened out a kinda annoying stumble she had at idle.  It came out something like $40 for the TFI and the tool.

Though I discovered her family is bloody annoying if there's a car problem they find out about.  I had it narrowed down to the correct part within like 5 min, but as soon as my g/f mentioned to them that my car was having problems, they kept giving suggestions which fit none of the symptoms, and just were not listening to me.  It's ok, they were trying atleast.  But when her uncle was like "Broken huh?  I'll give you $5 for it as it sits" and kept on that for quite a while and then getting really rude and insulting about it;  it's a  good thing for him that I didn't have a Cheater-bar or a Tire-bat in the car...

you may wanna change out the stator assembly.

disconnect the vac to the egr and see what happens,,if no change then see if its slightly stuck open.  You many wanna spray carb cleaner up in the pvc gold fitting on the rear of the cfi driver side to loosen carbon. try to force it to run with the trottle if you can.

here are a few things that might help you out........

Check the fuel cut off switch.  In my 87 it's in the trunk behind the tail light cover.
