Stock 1986-88 Cougar/T-Bird 5.0 alternators are 65 amps. A stock 1987-93 Mustang 2G 5.0 alternator is 75 amps. You can use the Mustang style in your car with a few minor alterations to the alternator mounting bracket (yes, the big aluminum one). I believe the Mark VII's from our era had ~95 amps and am not sure if they will fit our brackets. I remember that casing being very large. Paul's link above provides excellent information about upgrading to the 130-amp 3G alternator. The 3G alternator is very compact and will bolt up to our bracket (again, with minor revisions to the bracket). Wiring is a bit different but nothing painstaking. A very worthwhile upgrade and highly recommended.
